Brightwell Magnesion-P

Pink to purple then blue/grey what ever color is observed first right?

If you have 20gal and your Mag is 1200 and you want to bump it up at least to 1350 you need to dose 46.8 grams. I'm sure you know how hot this mix gets... He can hear the sizzle when your adding it to water.
yes i know how hot it gets. i usually mix it and wait a few hours at least to start dosing it.

yes. changes from pink to a purple then one extra drop usually turns it blue

well the original question was how to mix it properly. i should mix the 40+ grams in 8 oz water?

I would mix in as much water as it would mix. If you can mix it in 8oz and it all mixes then that's ok. In the least amount you can. I mix it in a 500ml glass beaker. It gets stupid hot. And I use a magnetic stirrer so I let it mix good. I keep adding until I see it doesn't want to mix anymore or I sense the beaker will pop from the heat. Also your adding water so be careful and don't throw off you salinity by adding a lot of ro water.

First thing im gonna do is get a different test kit or maybe even take it to the LFS to have them test it for me.

i wouldnt feel comfortable adding all of that at once i'd probably dose it over a week. its just frustrating that the mixing instructions are so vague. so much easier with calcium and alkalinity suppliments.

Getting a second opinion is always a great idea. I don't think they even know how to dose their own products. Their dosing instructions are different all over the place. As Randy stated they changed ingredients and didn't bother to tell anybody.

yeah im most likely going to change the product i use. just dont know which yet. i dont want to have to ask for proper mixing instructions every time i need to dose something.

ESV is always a good choice. What ever you decide try to get in powder.. it will be cheaper and take you further in the long run.

lol

Glad you asked. I think the marine scientist that designed their chemical products should have been replaced by a chemical scientist long ago (though I think he is gone now). I'd sure flunk him out of a chemistry class.

1. Brightwell is either chemically ignorant or intentionally misleads customers about the nature and efficacy of some of its products. There are several that fit this description, but Boost pH+ is the poster child for utterly incorrect claims:

"Boost pH+ High Range pH Increaser, raises pH only without increasing alkalinity or calcium (in tanks already having a proper dKH)"

"Warning: Contains caustic sodium and potassium hydroxides"

Are you kidding me? What utter crapola. I'd think it is just ignorance that makes them think that hydroxide does not add alkalinity, but then they sell a different product that contains hydroxide where they claim it does raise alkalinity.

Kalk+2 is also a highly misleading product for other reasons, but it demonstrates that somewhere at Brightwell, someone knows that hydroxide adds alkalinity:

"Ingredients Calcium hydroxide, Strontium hydroxide, Magnesium hydroxide"

"Provides temporary alkalinity and helps maintain pH within the desired range when used
as directed."

2. Brightwell products do not carry any sort of purity claims.

3. Brightwell products are very expensive for supplements with no purity claim, even if they could do what they claim.

BRS showed an icp analysis of their magnesium and apparently it beat BRS's purity grade so BRS said the had to up their game a little. I can link the video if you want. (PS this isn't a pro brightwell comment I was just mentioning that the purity of their magnesium is in a brs video)

Thanks. Of course, since there is no purity assurance provided, it can change with every batch that Brightwell buys.

one of the impurity issues with magnesium chloride is ammonia. ICP won’t detect that.

Final comment on the Magnesion P, if you get it from BRS, DO NOT BELEIVE their incorrect dosing instructions. They still have the wrong info from years ago.
Really? Just looked at BRS dosing instructions on their website and it is the same as the Brightwell dosing instructions. I called Brightwell to talk with David the plant manager and he was on the phone. I wanted to talk with him about comments you have made recently and in the past about Brightwell Aquatics. So low and behold, the owner, Jack Kent called me back. Jack is an innovator in the industry and his products have helped aquarist both salt and fresh ( Kent Marine ) around the world as most of us know. We talked for a good 1.5hrs and I learned a lot from him and also learned so much about the history you are pedaling about them. I know now the info you are putting out about Brightwell is by no means 100% FACT. You need to tell the WHOLE story before slamming a company. It is your choice to not use there products as it is anyone's choice. I could keep on going with more about my conversation with Jack but I would be typing for hours. Anyone reading this post IMO it if you ever have questions about a product from any manufacture I would just give them a call and not just take the word from someone that does not give you all the FACTS.

Sadly, you are mistaken. All of my posts here provided the 100% evidence that what I said is true. Which claim of mine is not true?

Did you even read what I wrote, or are you just a fan boy for Brightwell? I am the one who got Jack to change the magnesium claim, by communicating with him! I have the exact emails from him and myself if you still do not believe it.

But I showed proof that it was still wrong on the BRS site. THEY CHANGED IT TODAY AT MY REQUEST.

Really. before you come on here claiming crap, you need to educate yourself on chemical reality.

Name a single thing I posted to this thread that is untrue,

A SINGLE ONE.

Here's what BRS said TODAY to my asking them to change it:

"Hi Randy, thanks for bringing this to our attention! We've updated our product page to reflect the updated information that Brightwell has listed on their website. If you ever see anything on our website that doesn't look quite right, don't hesitate to send us a PM and we're happy to investigate."

Of course, they are 7 years late, but better late than never.

Looks like I was right, and your correction was misguided.

What facts am I missing?

Brightwell has still has incorrect info on their web site, which I clearly posted above.

You are apparently missing some facts. I don't know if you misunderstood Jack, or he doesn't understand his own products and then he convinced you of something that isn't true.

Sure, give manufacturers a call. Just don't accept what they say at face value if it differs from what a chemistry expert claims about it. Many manufacturers mislead people.

Let's take a different approach.

Do you think Brightwell Boost pH+ doesn't raise alkalinity like the Brightwell web site claims?

I'm still not sure the proper way to mix it lol. I have enough to make one more batch I believe.

I'm also confused as to why I can't get an accurate reading with my salifert kit

It makes no difference how much water you dissolve it in, but use RO/DI, not tank water.
