Anyone use this salt? I just opened a new bucket and it smells like chemicals. Some kind of petroleum products, maybe gasoline or kerosene. Anyone else experience this?

Well,
I've used it in the past, but can't remember what it smells like.

Where did you buy it from?

I use it and really like it. Mixes easily and does not precipitate if you heat it up to tank temp.

This is from their web site. "NēoMarine may have a slight sulfurous odor when the container is first opened; this is a result of the use of anhydrous magnesium chloride and will dissipate." This is the only smell I can tell from mine and they are right, you can't smell it in the mixed water.

I mixed 35g over the last 24 hours. The mixed saltwater smells exactly like the unmixed salt. I'm not going to use it. I'll contact the lfs I purchased it from and see if they have anything to say. Kinda dissapointed, never should have switched from Tropic Marin Pro Reef

I noticed the exact same smell after getting to the bottom of my Brightwell salt recently. Thought it was from my mixing container at first but it’s definitely the salt. It definitely has a kerosene or melted plastic like smell.

Did you use it? This makes me nervous. I just picked up a new bucket.

I get the 150 gallon box from Amazon. I never noticed the smell before but I assume this is just the “sulfur” smell Brightwell says is normal. Initially I stopped using the salt I had on hand and ordered a new box but the brand new one had the same smell. I guess I just attribute “sulfur smell” to something more like hard boiled so my gut instinct was that something might be wrong. I’ve had nothing but good things from the NeoMarine salt itself. Curious what others have noticed. Going to ask a Brightwell rep as well.
