I put 2 0f the 1.5" blocks in the filter backet of my 25g lagoon a little less than a year ago. Tonight i was doing maintenance I noticed some scum on the blocks and decided to take them out and rinse them off. Well when i grabbed one it was like stiff mud and fell apart in my hand. Is this normal?

Not sure if it’s normal. I had two of the xport bricks in my sump about three years ago that did the same thing. Crumbled in my hands and there was a ton of silt left behind from the bricks deteriorating over time.

Ok at least it isn't just me. I guess Ill go back to matrix

This is why I dislike them as they become extremely brittle. Mine didn't turn to mud but I have heard plenty of others who had that happen. The three I have (a plate and two bricks) created a mess in my sump. They just crumbled very easily in mine

i’ve heard/read that the maxspect bio media lasts longer than the brightwell/marine pure. and that it doesn’t leech other minerals into your water.

after some así la test i saw that aluminum was higher. after sourcing/searching to find the root, i ended up attributing it to the marine pure media in my sump. i try to be as gentle as i can while i clean the sump to avoid further “leeching” and deterioration

Yup normal, if your water chemistry is low on alk, and calcium.
Low dkh water literally “melts” the bricks over time.
I was never low on Alk or calcium and had issues but maybe I was just lucky as usual

I'll have to check alk and calcium. This tank only has soft corals so I havent checked that often

And check PH is not below 7
I have a bio brick years old, and I can still pick it up by hand.
But my PH is 8.3, alk 11.5dkh.

Acidic waters can turn it to mush. Takes some time though.

I checked the blocks in a tank that Im dosing 2 part in. The Alk stay at 9 and Ph is 7.9-8.2. The blocks in this tank were even worse. Not a major problem I'll just go back to matrix. Just kinda disappointed in this product.
