so I bought a rock that was in the ocean for 7 years.. or so I was told. it has muscles and all sorts of things that I hope will spread some new life to my tank.. does it work like that?

Only if your feeding is above average quality and quantity and sustained.

Given typical high dissolved nutrients low undegraded proteins in the water, no floating copes and plankton, that will turn to regular live rock in a year. You have control over what it does with the amount of work you are willing to do, or automate. Agreed that's high quality and much better than my live rock, it's mainly coralline and several worms
