Brittle star

So i bought a brittle star today and the guy sold me these little frozen fish to feed it. I think their called silver shads or something like that. He said thaw one out and drop it in the water and it will come over and eat it. Well i tried it and it never came out from under the rock. So i youtubed it and it looks like i have to target feed him. So im wondering, will he ever come out from under the rocks or do i just try to stick the food between one of the rocks and hope he grabs it? Id hate to leave it in there uneaten my nitrates will sky rocket right? Can someone help me plz. Oh ya! Also i read that if you dont feed them they will nab one of my fish.
