So I’m currently seeding some rocks in a bin to add to my display tank. I just noticed the glass on the cheap thermometer broke. I tried researching online on what this thermometer is made of (the red jello like substance, black beads, mercury) but i can’t find a lot of info. So 2 things:
1) If the black beads are lead, what should i do now with the bin full of rocks?
2) IF the thermometer is mercury (i read it might be alcohol too), what should my next step be?

Thanks for any feedback

A similar thing happened to a youtuber when his magnet algae cleaner got to close it. The beads are magnetic and I dont believe lead is magnetic. Use a neodymium magnet superglue to some string to fish out the beads. I doubt its mercury if its branded to aquariums. Also I haven't even seen a mercury thermometer in general for years [emoji14]

So does that mean when I’m done seeding the rocks, it’s somewhat safe to stick the rocks into the DT even if there’s a couple of beads stuck in the rocks?

Well the guy had it shatter in his DT... he didn't have any problems just his tank looked like a black snow storm

By any chance does this youtuber own a corgi?

I had an oscar tank years ago and one got frightened and broke a thermometer just like that, didnt noticed till the next day. Just did a 25% wc, vacuumed up the glass and had no problems.

I had one break in a QT tank. The beads rust pretty bad. I'd try to fish them out. Otherwise maybe add carbon to filter out contaminants.

I wouldn't worry about it. If anything does leech out, the concentration will likely be harmless due to the volume of water in the tank.

The red fluid is alcohol. You can't get mercury thermometers off the shelf anymore.
