Well, today didn’t start out well. My wife woke me up about 5am to let me know that water was streaming out of the ceiling vent in the laundry room. My tank is on the 2nd floor, directly above the laundry room..

My return pump had shut off during the night and the siphon didn’t break between my return line and the tank, so it overflowed the sump and then overflowed the cabinet below the tank that I Flexsealed in case of this happening. Ugh. I probably lost 4 gallons of water total. I’ve been cleaning that up today and figuring out how I can keep this from ever happening again. I definitely need a back flow preventer on the return line, as well as a leak detection kit for my Apex.

Wow man, that's terrible. I'm using the George Fisher Wye Check Valve from BRS. You can disassemble it and clean it if it ever gets gunked up. It only happened to me once, I had a run of a few months that the pump wasn't turned off. It got stuck when I finally did. I popped it open, pushed the valve down, and I was back up and running. Now I turn it off once a week to clear it.

Good luck, hope you didn't have too much damage.

Man Bronc, that's rough. Hope the cleanup isn't too bad.

I clean my check valve every few months and haven't had a problem yet. I also keep my return jets close to the surface of the water to minimize any back siphon that does occur. My sump can handle a check valve sticking open and a full siphon.

Oh man! That stinks!

Even a cheap water leak alarm would at least let you know water is in the stand. I just flooded my basement for the third time in 2 months. I added a leak detector to my RODI setup, among other things.
 
Thanks guys. It’s all cleaned up now. I’ll definitely get a check valve on order tomorrow - I need to measure my return line and see what size I need.

Everything cleaned up ok. I received the check valve from BRS but I ordered the wrong size spigots to go with it. Just reordered the correct ones today. I’ll post a pic when I get it installed.
 
Well, last Friday night my tank overflowed again. On Sunday I installed the check valve and setup my APEX to notify me if the return pump stopped.

At 1:45am this morning, it happened again. I didn't wake up and it overflowed again. That was the last straw for me. I let our local reef club leaders know to come and get all of my coral and fish - and it is now all gone. I'll be selling my tank and all equipment now. Having a tank on the second story of a house with lower end equipment just isn't the way to go.

I'll miss everyone here and if I ever move to a new house where I can have a tank on the 1st floor I might get back into the hobby in the future. Thanks everyone for all of the friendships we had!

Bronc, I'm so sorry to see this. :(

I understand, but it will be tough to see you leave the hobby. I do hope you stop by and hang out on occasion.

Oh... and how is the house shopping going? o_O:p

I live in apt building and had a tank pop on me Friday night while I was getting ready to go out, I was like 10mins away from stepping out I could only imagine what it would’ve been, my downstairs neighbors complain about the people above me I could only imagine what it would’ve been if saltwater was to creep into their apt, anyways never thought a leak detector would be so important for those that think a controller like apex is not important, also just finished reading someone cooked their fish with a faulty heater, not apex but a controller with some type of notification is a must in 2019! Shoot I get notifications when my 70yo aunt posts a pic on FB why not a notification on my tank lol

Ok... so I had a change of heart. I'm selling the 75g tank and buying a 40g IM AIO. Should be little chance of overflowing THAT one! I'll start a new build thread once I get it.
