Brooklynella Treatment

Snagged everything from my LFS that came recommended from these forums, but each med was only an alternative to the main treatments.

I know with brook it’s important to treat immediately so I’m just going with what I’ve got.

I’ve got a 5 gal bucket. Just started the air stone. My intent is to use the quick cure as a 45minute bath. The directions say 1 drop per gallon.

I don’t think the Acriflavine will be much use as it is advertised for freshwater. And I think the paraguard is more for general QT and internal parasites, right?

Not the expert here but can tell you from experience Yes you have the right approach for what you have. The Paraguard will not help much at this point. I think the quick cure does have formalin so best bet. Not sure but can you after dip use as a prolonged treatment.

Acriflavine would work in saltwater too but out of the 3 since you have quick cure I would go with that given if has formalin. Just watch out for stress and try to do it outdoors or in a well ventilated room given it’s a human carcinogen.

I really wish you the best. Brook wiped out my tank except for a sail fin tang and one chromis. I didn’t have all the meds on hand and I believe the quick cure is what I used that saved them over a long qt. Unfortunately, any fish that already looked bad didn’t make it. I hope you have better luck. Now I keep a medicine cabinet of stuff on hand.

Formalin should neutralize most of brook after a bath assuming dosing is right. It may be necessary to treat with antibiotics after due to common secondary bacterial infections as well as some remaining parasites. That’s why it’s recommended to run the fish through 2 weeks of metro.

I was so freaked out I kinda did both. Gave the bath but also did the longer qt approach to make sure. It was awhile ago but I believe I did it for about 2 to three weeks but then kept them in qt for another 4 weeks so my tank can go fallow. Any fish that was already shedding only lasted a few days sorry to say. The tang and chromis looked fine when I started them. Weird how I lost about 10 fish and these 2 did ok.

Well, I put them both in the bath. He looked WAY BETTER immediately. I'm really hoping he's able to bounce back. I'll probably throw him back in in about 48 hours.

Unfortunately the little guy started showing more signs just a few hours later. I read here on this wonderful forum, that it's best to wait 48hrs before another bath. So I gave him a quick 5min FW dip. He REALLY didn't like that process, but his slime coat looked much better when I put him back in the salt.

He still isn't eating though. = (

I also have lost 10+ fish in the last couple of days not realizing it was a fish parasite known as Brooklynella. Been fighting a cyano problem thinking it was a water quality issue, but it looks like now being Brooklynella. I have about 10 fish left, not sure I can catch them to quarantine them. If not, not sure of the best way to treat the tank. I read through the thread and not sure how the tank was infested.

Have you added anything to your DT without QT? To eradicate brook you will need to let the DT go fallow for 6 weeks. Here is a write up on brook.
