Broomtail wrasse

I have one of these but not for very long. Has anyone ever kept one?

Curious for any advice or experience about diet and long term care. Thanks!

I've had a couple of these over the years, as well as some other members of the genus. This species isn't reef safe of course, and can reach 14" long, with a maximum length in the wild of about 20"

They feed on shrimp, crabs and mollusks in the wild. I've fed them just a standard variety of seafoods in aquariums; shrimp, squid, gel diet and krill.

I've fed mine ghost shrimp, mysis, squid and mollies. I dropped the live ghost shrimp once I got him on other food. There seems to be a shortage around here and it took a 1hr one way drive to get them.

One source online I found said they eat every couple of days. What should the proper feeding interval be for best health?

Do you have any idea how big their mouth is full grown? Do I need to worry about a Powder Blue Tang?

I always fed mine every day. so I can't really speak to feeding them every other day. I've never had any fish in this genus cause problems with predation on tank mates that were. larger than you know, like maybe a little clown fish or something. So I think it'll be fine with a powder blue tang.

Mine is currently about 4.5-5" long. Doesn't bother any tankmates, even the 1" damsels. Really awesome fish, amazingly smart and a great personality. He will eat brittle stars, urchins, really any motile inverts, but leaves coral and anemones alone. He eats quite a bit of clam, mysis, jumbo mysis, squid, nori, and NLS pellets at least 3× daily.

Ours eats everyday and gets along great with everyone. We have him with a porcupine puffer, sunset wrasse and a soap fish. He’s a great fish~
