Hi, I’m new to saltwater and have only had my tank running since July. I’ve had a small amount of brown algae that seems to be getting worse recently. Can anybody help ID it? My nitrates and phosphates have been at zero. Tank is also a little cloudy with lots of small white particles floating around. Not sure if that has anything to do with it. The algae seems to like high flow areas.

You may need a toy microscope from Amazon to ID it for sure.

Did you start with dry rock? If so, your nitrates and phosphates at 0 will end up being terrible in the near future. Look up the Dino thread by mcarroll.

Terrible! I’m trying to get nutrients up but so far things are not responding to additional fish and food.

Food is not the way to go.

Read through at least the first post and click through as many of the links as you can take. :) Run the dino test to make sure that's what you have and then see where to go from there.

With a dead rock start and zero's across the board, there's a strong chance that you're going to need some liquid nitrates and phosphates to dose.

It looks filamentous to me. Could be the start of green hair algae or lyngbya. Lyngbya is a filementous cyano where as gha is more plant than not. Either way, the tank looks new and should pass with time. Just an ugly phase.

Thanks reeferoxx. I’m going to give it some time and let the tank settle in. Before I spend any more time worrying.
