I don’t know what this is. It was fine this morning, then I came back from work and noticed brown spots all over my sand and rocks. Any ideas on how to get rid of it?

Is it a new tank ?
If so probably diatoms ?
You read/ researched about starting up reef tanks and the ugly stages I prezume ?
If not maybe best reading up what generally happens at start off tank as it starts to mature

Here little guide on some common hitch hikers

Little article on some off the common and not so common algaes we may encounter in reef tanks and causes/preventative measures and some cuc that may help.
What I did is research what cuc eat certain algaes then researched if going be compatible with my researched list if future livestock/ fish choices and added a few of each cuc when the algeas first started to show up but not to many at once as could starve and start eating each other ir just decompose and raise your nutrients then cause ripple effect giving you extra algaes .
So want enough cuc that can help you keep current algaes in check and if cant then add few more and if cuc do to good a job then stop adding and would then have to supplement feeding your cuc so dont starve with some nori/algae sheets or some kind off meaty foods if say nassarious snails as some cuc good for one job but not another.
Like nassarious snails good at turning sand over and eat mainly meaty foods but mine also love algae sheets.
Trouchus snails good for Rocks and glass
Conchs good for turning sand bed over but not so good for rocks.
And some snails can right themselves up fall upside down and some can't,if cant then hermits or fish could get a tasty snack etc
All about finding that right balance like anything in our reef tanks .
Goodluck
