Hi Everyone,

I'm sure this topic has been discussed hundreds of times on this forum and was curious if someone could point me to the top threads that explain why brown algae forms on the glass and how to troubleshoot the problem.

Thanks!

Algae and bacteria form on virtually everything in the tank. Ya just need to wipe it off.

Thanks for the response. So if I have to clean the glass every day to get the brown stuff off this is normal? Sorry for the newbie question, I don't mind cleaning but I was thinking something was out of balance since I have to clean the glass daily.

I have to clean the brown stuff off my glass every three days or so if I want my tank to look pristine. Just stay on top of it. The better your tank looks, the more interested in it you will stay, and the more interested you are, the better your tank will look. That's how it works for me.

How long are your lights running on the tank? I use to have this problem(which I still have to clean the glass, just not as much) when I was running my metal halide lighting for 10 hours a day. I have cut it back to 7.5 hours with my actinic cutting on 1 hour before/after the metal halides. This helped out alot

You'd get morenof the brownish algae growing on the glass if it had direct lighting hitting it. Ive got my LEDs back a bit and dont get any brown on the glass anymore. I had much more when I had haildes and they hit the glass.
