Hello Everyone:

I have a 150 gallon tank, just set it up in March. I have live white rock, various coral, two clown fish, a blue tang and a yellow tang. Also have a few star fish and a bunch of snails and shrimps. I have been working with a guy who helped me set up the tank and has been servicing the tank regularly.

After about three months of a perfectly clear tank, my beautiful live white rock is now completely covered with thick brown furry algae. I would say is happened in a matter of a couple of weeks, even after I was going regular weekly water changes and tank cleanings. I have a picture attached but I am not sure if you all can identify what type of algae this is. Anyone know? Its thick almost cottony, not the thin brown stringy looking algae. It has built up very thick along the rocks. As you can see, you almost cannot even tell, but those are white rocks underneath, just completely covered in the brown algae.

I am not sure if you can tell in the picture, but two of my coral are losing color and turning white, which I think is a sign that they are not doing well either. All fish seem okay. I have one coral in the front that is a gorgeous blue coral that opens out like a pancake. Its still alive and breathing fine, but it has yet to open up flat since its been in the tank (for almost 3 months now). It stays closed like a shell. I am wondering about that as well.

Anyways, my fish tank guy says the algae infestation is because I was giving my tank too much high intensity light and the water is too warm. He is telling me that the quickest solution is to buy a chiller. The one he recommends he says costs about $1100. I trust my fish guy so far. He is really good and spend a ton of time on my tank. I generally trust him, but I would love some additional feedback on:

1. Does anyone know what kind of algae this is? Is it a really bad algae?
2. Thoughts on how to get rid of algae?
3. Any ideas why that one coral in the front won't open up after 3 months?
4. Overall thoughts on my tank (zoom in if you can to see everything better).

I am open to any comments, opinions and gentle, constructive feedback. I am a novice here but I am working with someone who knows what he is going. I just want more thoughts and to share my experience so far with other reefers and fish tank enthusiasts.

Thanks!

Can you post your parameters please, including temperature

The tank is 3 months old? And is that a foxface? I see the blue tang but not the yellow tang.

Can you post a close up of the algae? What temp does the tank usually run at? Adding a small fan might work just as well as a chiller depending on how much you need to lower it...
