What the best way to get rid of brown algae from the sand in my saltwater tank

Just weather the storm man... I just went through all that too and now I'm starting to get coralline growth. It is by far the hardest thing to learn but by far the most beneficial, patients. your getting close to having your tank cycled. Once you get the green algae growing (Cyano Bactria) your ready for fish. Test first to be sure but that's general consensus. How did you cycle your tank?

Huh?

The part about growing green algae (cyano) being an indication of the cycle being complete.

Please correct anything I may have said wrong, just from a few months of constant reading on this forum and many other sources that is what I have picked up on. And I'm wondering if he ghost fed his tank or threw a shimp in there to start the cycle.

If you're growing green cyano you have a mess on your hands. It's much tougher to get rid off than the typical red cyano. Growing algae or cyano isn't what I would go by to indicate introducing fish to a tank.

Well I may have read, and misinterpreted then. Because I read the article in in this link. I went on to read about cyano bacteria and found that blue/green algae is another name for cyano bacteria. I'm still new too all this my self. But everything I have found on the subject all had about the same conclusions. I know that in the link it says after cyano it is green/brown hair algae which is another stage but point being that he should be getting close to the end of the cycle and can expect to have fish soon. http://www.reefedition.com/291/
I'm sorry for any wrong information I have givin and I would like to clear this up for my own knowing...

Blue green cyano isn't a common thing to happen and it's very nasty. Yes it's very common with a new system to have an outbreak of red cyano and some hair algae between the 3-6 month (typically)

To tell when you're able to add livestock is to create an ammonia spike. As the ammonia is processed it will create nitrite. As the nitrite is processed it creates nitrate. Once the ammonia falls to 0ppm and you see the nitrite start to fall you can start stocking the tank slowly.

I had never read to create an ammonia spike after you have had the tank cycling... Only to begin the process in the first place. And When I had dug into cyano I understood it as all the same thing. Not as red one type and blue/green another. I'm sorry for any confusion. This is why I love this site because when something is put out as confusing for a new member or anyone for that matter, people catch it and will correct it!

No worries at all.

I was explaining the entire cycling process. You don't want to create an ammonia spike after the cycle had started, only initially to start the cycle. Happy reefing friend

Ok I gotcha then. I hadn't really thought about there being different strains of cyano. Learn something new everyday. Thanks :)
