My tank is several months old, started to clean up naturally from the cycling brown algae bloom however 2-3 weeks ago I started to get a massive brown algae bloom. Last week I did my weekly clean and 24 hours later that glass was dirty again. The rock is covered in it

Nitrates are high, 20ppm but that’s been after a ammonia, nitrite spike since adding fish. I suspect this will continue to drop as bacteria grow.

My filter sock was a little dirty and I’ll run down and buy a new one this weekend so cleaned my old one out.

What’s the cause of this issue?

Where do you get your water from?
Are you using rodi Water to mix and top off with ?
Nitrates at 20 in a new tank is not high ...
This is still a new tank .. although several months old ..
What are your other parameters?

You had a brown algae bloom, and now you're getting another one? Your first sentence is a little confusing. If this is your first brown algae bloom, then it's diatoms, which is a natural step in the maturation of a tank. It's consuming the extra silicates in your system.

Using RO/DI water.

Had my initial break out and that settled down, now in the middle of my section one.

Just worried/confused why it’s happened.

Would a filter sock past it’s best cause this!? It was really bad.

So the problem still exists. Going to adjust my skimmer and have replaced my filter sock.
Nitrite, Nitrate, Ammonia, Ph and Phosphate are all looking really good.

Perhaps my skimmer which is on a timer isn't on long enough to work effectively.

I’ve had a diatom bloom which went away in a few weeks. I stopped my water changes,
added poly floss to my overflow (which was changed daily) and added 2 conchs.

Why do you have your skimmer on a timer? Mine runs 24/7.
Noise, I've extended it an hour later into the evening and a couple of hours in the morning. I may even look to just turn it off 7pm-10pm (the hours which we are in the lounge watching TV, having dinner etc)
