Hi all. For the last 2 months or so, I keep blowing off brown dust-like substance off my live rock and wiping it off the glass. The sand is clean, maybe because of the diamond goby. NO3 is around 20, PO4 0.03, so...not dinos? The tank is not new either, has been running for about 3 years. The stuff blows off easily and I guess it gets skimmed out, as the filters get brown every 2-3 days or so. I also have a little brown algae on some parts of the rocks. What is this stuff?

What are you feeding the tank? A lot of fish food has smthg called "Ash" which is innate leftover substance from food

I feed twice per day. Flakes or pellets in the morning and a cube of frozen mysis or something in the evening

Did you add anything other than livestock? Rock, sand...etc? Diatoms can make a come back if you add anything. If nothing has been added perhaps Cyano bacteria of some sort? How is the flow in the tank?

No, I have added nothing except coral frags. I think the flow is Ok. Not too much, but not many if any blind spots and corals are swaying nicely. How can I tell if it's cyano? Does it behave like dust?

sounds like diatoms to me, usually they burn off once the silicates are used up. how long has the tank been setup? new tanks will go through a diatoms bloom, they sometimes come back after a cyano outbreak in my experience. if the tank is not new check your rodi it could be the cause of the silicates.

The tank has been running for about 3 years. I don't use RO water. I have a high end under the sink house filter and have always used that

Your home system likely has silicates based on the above statement. You are likely lacking Deionization which is key for removing silicates from your RO water.

Also when was the last time you changed filters on that system?

rodi is the only way to go really the di resin is important to remove silicates

This is totally inadequate for a saltwater aquarium system. You will be fighting odd stuff in the water for ever with only that filter. I would suggest you invest in a proper RODI system. Since you are in AU I would also suggest you speak to your local aquarium shop on where to get a proper system. Make sure it's an RO-DI system, not just an RO system. The DI is an additional step of filtration beyond RO. So if you can get a good RO system you can just add the DI part.
