Brown film on glass

My tank is constantly plagued with brown film on the glass that I have to scrub off each day or two which is now becoming a pain. I'm not sure what could be causing it and would like to know what I can do so it doesn't form so much.

the previous owner had it for 3 years and then it got transferred to my house 4 months ago. I got all the contents the previous owner had

The brown stuff is algae. You do the things that slow down algae growth, less nutrients in the water and lower the lights.
