Need some help with algae ID. 3 mo tank so likely some type of "ugly". Wispy hairlike, will blow off. Pops up quickly and often temporarily recedes. Present on sand and rock. Tank is nutrient deficient but I've been unsuccessful raising them.

Organism in the photomicrographs look like diatoms, the kind that form chains rather than living as separate single cells.

I've had diatoms, the dusty powdery ones previously. I'm using RO/DI water so I suppose this is one of those new tank things that needs to run its course. Should I add more snails, or perhaps an urchin?

I agree with you. It’s a new tank thing
