See if you get bubbles when you run the cyano/peroxide test linked in the dino thread....

My guess is hair algae + cyano.....@taricha may be right about hair+diatoms though. (doesn't look to me like anything but green algae in the scope pics tho...only seeing the "brown" in the normal pics. red cyano + green hair = brown....it's still a guess.

Just curious, do you have any clove polyps? I’m convinced a new clove frag introduced this brown algae. On the cloves stalks it grows like crazy, it’s unstoppable.

I have clove polyps and this stuff is all over them! I didn’t have it before they were introduced.

I started using API Algaefix Marine and dosing as it says. I also cut the lights off for 3 days and feed every 2 days for a week instead of every day. I increased flow as well. Corals are happy as ever and fish are just fine. I began running GFO in a reactor as well (I started with a cup then increased slowly from there). IDK which worked better or if the combination of everything I have done resulted in it being gone. Since dosing with Algeafix, my tank is crystal clear and I don't have any algae growing even on the glass. I usually have to scrub glass every 3 or 4 days but nothing now. I know people are going to say I just did quick fix and it'll come back but guess I'll wait and see. I think my biggest problem was I was most definitely overfeeding.

That might be my issue too! I was feeding reef roids three days a week when I noticed it. I cut back on feeding and ha e been doing my regular weekly water changes. I also took out the cloves and brushed them lightly with a toothbrush. It looks a lot better and has really seemed to work. My tank is only 3 months old and I’ve read that this kind of thing is somewhat normal in a new tank. One other thing I do is regularly change the filter floss. This combination of things has really seemed to work in my favor.
