Brown/Orange Sponge growing under elegance coral

I noticed my elegance was closed up after xoming back from 2 week vacation. Upon closer inspection I saw a some white stringy stuff growing at the base and some more orange/brown stuff underneath when I lifted up the coral. What is this sponge like stuff and has anyone dealt with it before? I toon coral out and scrubbed it clean and dipped it in lugol iodine. I also took the rock out and scrubbed it as good as I could to remove it all.

I agree on some type of sponge. I had a similar textured one growing up a euphyllia stalk causing it to close up. Mine was a dark color though. I scrubbed it off as well.

That looks nasty. I don't know about this particular one, but I have had white sponge growing on the shaded skeleton of both euphyllias and catalaphyllias, and although not particularly aggressive, it definitely irritated them enough to close up their tentacles nearby. I just carefully scraped it all off, taking care not to damage the coral, and it didn't come back. As far as I know. I almost never see the shady side of the elegance corals any more.

Looking spongy. I think you are on the right track so far.Keep a eye on it and repeat the procedure if needed.
