Brown Sand! What to do?

That sucks. I have been having issues for a few months. I am buying a huge clean up crew for my 75. Will see if that helps. It seems like the answer is feed less, lights out, or bigger skimmer. Who knows.

i have the same thing going on. green on the glass and brown on the sand. I read through the blog link and i have the bigger skimer and the brs dual reactor with gfo and carbon. I also have a sand sifting star, feather duster, nas snails, macro and cheto in my sump.

this pic is my skimmer and algae on the left sider where my household spiral bulb is.

my test are all good ph 8.0 ate 0 ite 0 phos 0.0 amo 0 DKH 9.0 Cal 455ppm sg .024 temp 79 sailfert

im looking for either a solution or the type and i can find the solution thanks

Welcome to R2R bro!

While you need to find the cause, I used Algae Fix for Marine aquariums and it took out my algae in 6 days! :D

"The question is, why are you using a freshwater air stone in a saltwater aquarium? If anything the increased oxygenation will help drive off CO2 which is used by cyano. Cyano growth is usually a factor of dissolved nutrient levels (ie, phosphate and/or nitrate), lighting and flow." < from another post (going on 8hrs reading/searching and testing)

i do think i have CO2 im my rodi... My problem?

So the algae fix worked? I have used it in the past, and it worked, but I have been used 2 doses( 6 days) and now mine is coming back! AGGHHHH!!!!!:waaaht:

It's a simple issue with too many nutrients that are not being consumed as quickly as needed. Those nutrients may be actual food, or they may be light-related.

Not feeding much can still be feeding a lot if things in the tank aren't eating what is being fed....if this is the issue, hire a clean up crew.

Reducing the photo-period or turning it off for a day or two once in a while can help.

Raising the amount of flow in the tank may also be a solution.

Nassarius snails being in the sand is going to do nothing for diatoms...BUT, nassarius snails eating left over meaty items is what will certainly help diatoms... You should avoid other "sand sifters" (sand sifting star fish, olive snails, etc) as they'll probably only worsen the problem.

Well I have the nassirus about 6 ro so in the tank, my phosphates test 0 and my nitrates and nitrites almost 0,I know that it will read that way because the algae is eating them up, I have cut back the halides to 6hrs and only feed freeze dried mysis everyother day. Small amount of seaweed for the tangs also but only 3 times per week. I am going to look into getting a sand sifter goby of some type so opnions please???

I didn't even know that they made freeze dried mysis. What brand is that?

I use it because it has a no ash analysis, where the flake foods have a ash content.

I have been told by a marine biologist in my local club to start dosing hydrogen peroxide for a week or so, 1ml per 10 gal.... "I have a nasty Dino outbreak" so I'm giving that a shot and will let you know how it goes...
We also had Justin credible at our last meeting talking about all the uses of peroxide in the hobby but I missed it.."stupid work" arrrrrr... I'll update ya guys how it goes.... He swears by it and does it daily for years now and I have saw his tank it's one of the cleanest I have ever saw in person... Hmm..

no its freeze dried. I also had frozen mysis but have since ran out. so thats why I am using the freeze dried.

so no suggestions on the sifter??

Doesn't the freeze dried mysis float and make it a pain in the butt to feed?....just curious :)

If you want a sifter that isn't going to destroy the important organisms in the sand....try a convict goby.

I have fund that yes it does float, but if you hold it in the water and let it get good and wet, it will then start to sink Also helps if you break it up and crush it between your fingers. I have to do this since I have small fish.
