I have this stuff growing over the majority of my Haitian live rock. It’s slimy to the touch and really just grows where ever my lights hit. I’ve tried expanding my cuc with urchins and other snails which help but I can’t seems to get it under control. More just annoying to look at than anything else. I’d like to me able to see my nice rock grow coralline and that sort of stuff. Any suggestions on getting rid of this?

I had Dino’s and beat it, this was there before the Dino’s and now after. It’s not stringy and no air bubbles so I don’t think Dino’s. Which is good I guess.

I’ve been battling something similar and I started using Dr Tim’s Waste Away 3 days ago. I’m only up to about a 40% dose, but it’s clearing up slowly. I’ve got 2 more doses and then a water change. I might have to dose a second round, but hopefully it gets it all.

any pics of what you a battling? it would be nice to compare uglys

Any update on what it is or was or how things are going now? I may be dealing with the same thing. Whatever i have it is brown with the whites on and a very dark red with the blues on
I used some dr Tim’s waste away but it didn’t budge. Tuxedo urchins seem to eat it but not at the rate to eliminate it. The colors of algae you are describing are the same as what I have. We are battling the same slimy stuff. Let me know if u find something that takes it out!

Brown slimy stuff is about the closest thing I have found to a proper id lol my tuxedo urchin eats it to. Ive tried scrubbing it gfo and chemi clean. I’ve been looking in to using vibrant but haven’t jumped the gun. I’d like to know exactly what it is before jumping the gun again. Did you start with dry or live rock? My tank is about 8 months old bb started with dry rock and the stuff grows in the brightest spots on the rocks and it hasn’t killed any corals yet but mine isn’t as grown in as yours yet

I don’t think it will mess with your corals as mine just seems to grow only on the rock. As you said it only on the Brightest places, almost as if my radions are helping it grow. I started with dry hatian live rock and had it running in trash cans adding bacteria so it was well cycled when I started the tank. Pretty frustrating as I wish I had maybe acid washed it.

Man I did the same thing with Marco rock for about 6 months before starting the tank. I think a lot of phosphate may have bound to the rock in the barrels and it’s growing this stuff. Maybe just maybe it will go away on its own when the rock leaches out the phosphate?

Sooo I would not recommend vibrant. Pretty much wiped out all the sticks... but I haven’t lost my can do attitude yet. I kept doing more and more reading and researching. I believe that it is a type of Cyanobacteria just not the type you or I are accustomed to seeing maybe. It lays down a thick mat to colonize on instead of being long and stringy and easy to blow off. From what I have learned is its caused just like any other Cyano, by excess nutrients or in my case an imbalance of nutrients. My nitrate has always been undetectable but have had phosphate readings. So I am raising nitrate over 5 which should help lower phosphate and this matting Cyano isn’t supposed to like nitrate over 5ppm. Also I am scraping and blowing off the rocks daily. I started earlier this week and I hope I have found the answer. Cheers!
