what’s growing on my rock? i’m new to reefing/ keeping fish. it was just a little bit 2 days ago but i blew it off with a turkey baster and i came home from work today and now the whole rock is covered in it and just a little patch on the sand but i think it’s bc my diamond goby is constantly moving the sand.

Looks like diatoms. Normal part of the tank cycle. The tank is gonna get pretty ugly for a little while, just keep everything stable and ride it out. It won’t be long before it clears up.

should i keep my light running the regular schedule or turn them off?

It won’t matter much. If you turn them off it will get a little better, but when you turn them on again it will return. It just needs to run it course.

Also looks like you have some corals in there they need light. How long has the tank been up and running? You might have jumped the gun a little bit putting them in already. Tanks need time to mature before being able to support coral life. The best thing you can do right now is keep the tank stable, and just let it ride.

been running for 21 days

i was thinking i was lucky and wasn’t gonna get any algae since it didn’t happen within the first week lol

nah, this is about the time it starts. Seems like you get diatoms, rocks turn brown from other algae, then green, then hair, then it starts cleaning up. You can keep up with the diatoms by blowing off the rocks with a turkey baster and increasing flow as much as you can while not blowing away the corals.

looking better now, i added 3 hermit crabs this morning and they’re going to town. the hammer frag plug was completely brown yesterday
