Brown stuff?

My tank is only a 40 so I assume this would be fine
Should be. Takes me about 1x hour (from hose) to produce a 5gal bucket
I think other outlets in my house would take longer because of the pressure - just one thing to keep in mind.

I have a total of 7x 5gal buckets, but have 4x of them typically ready to go:
1 - RODI only
2- Mixed Salt Water
3- Medicated Water (when using QT)
4- Empty Waste Bucket

I find it essential to have those water ready to go in emergency situations. If no emergency, then just use as needed

So this isn't something you just walk over turn on and fill a bucket of rodi water with? It take hours to get say 7 gallons?

Haha no. Not sure if those exist (maybe!), but don't believe so. Bigger units can produce faster, but as mentioned, usually takes me 1x hour for a 5gal bucket.

That's about the rate I get.
And whoever said it's unbelievable to get $75 rodi...I have to respectfully disagree. I have the ro buddie with the di chamber. I do plan on upgrading to the newer twist version soon but the only downside for me is changing the di resin (I buy the whole canister) and it's saved me soooo much headache. I adore it. I have it hooked up to my 2 way tds meter. When I upgrade I'll get the 3 way.
OP-one rock doesn't mean you'll get hair algae. Just be on the lookout :)

So 1 hour for 5 gallons of good water but how much waste do you get per that 5 gallons
waste rate changes with temp and filter efficiency. on rodi youll see the ratios marked, and tips on how to improve it. I believe mine is 2:1 right now or just under. Im on a BRS 6 stage. I used 2 buckets to test the efficiency and trouble shoot when I set it up.

Who would like to give me their extra rodi system lol.
I got mine used. $75. $75 to replace the filters.
Also look around at ice companies, gas (o2 cO2 etc) companies and LFS for water. A tds meter is $14. Thats a good start.

Spectrapure sells a 90gpd refurbished 4 stage RODI that is rock solid for $118. BRS currently has their RODI stuff on sale I think, or at least some elements of it. I had an RO Buddie to start but I wasn't happy with how fast it ate up the DI resin. I've made about 100 gallons so far with the spectrapure measuring 0 TDS on the output and the resin hasn't moved more than a few millimeters on usage, whereas my RO Buddie burned through a DI cartridge after about 200 ish gallons. This is SoCal water which comes out of the tap at 500+ TDS so if your tap water is better than ours, it will last you even longer. If I were you, and planning on staying in this hobby for a considerable amount of time, invest now in a good RODI unit and save yourself trouble in the long run. When I make water I usually do 10 gallons at a time (5 to refill ATO and 5 for water change), takes about two hours but I make it while I do filter sock changes, skimmer cleaning, glass cleaning, etc. so the time is well spent.

You guys are right I need this. I wonder though since I didn't start off with rodi water how long it will take with simple watch changes to get the old tap water out.

In my big disaster(trusted lfs:rolleyes:) a month. That was just using it as top off.

If you do start dosing Vibrant or any other anti-algae treatment make sure you are changing your mechanical filtration (socks, pads, etc.) every other day or so as the algae dies off it will release those nutrients right back into the water, creating a seemingly endless cycle. Patience is your friend in this one! :)
