Brownish green snotty stuff on live rock

This stuff is pretty thin and waves in the water. Not sure what it is. Is it dangerous for my CUC, or just unsightly? Tank is 3 weeks old, rock has been in 2 weeks. 7lbs of which were live, the other 50+/- all base. Ammonia is at 0, high nitrates and nitrites. I planned on bringing in the CUC as soon as the nitrites died down. Any help would be appreciated.

Your tank is still cycling dont hassle about its most likely diatoms.

+1 All sorts of stuff can and may grow in your tank those first weeks. You can expect your rocks to change colors a few times! Your CUC will usually avoid stuff that is harmful to them (along with a lot of the algae and pests you specifically bought them to eat.. lol)

I think you're correct. Once nitrite is gone the tank is safe for CUC. You don't have to rush it though.
There's only so much you can do with a brand new tank. I enjoyed adding 2-3 snails this week.. two the next.. a few hermits the next

I actually found a local person near me that sold me nearly 60 pounds of base rock for 50 bucks. Couldn't pass it up. The lfs sold me the 7lb for 72 [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23] thank you though. This is my 56 gallon column

$72 is pretty steep for live rock. Barring any nasty hitch hikers, you'll be glad to have it though. It'll speed the cycle up a little, but it seems to aid in the tank's overall maturation a lot more. That's probably where you'll see your first coraline, feather dusters, and so on.

I'm only a few months ahead of you with a similarly sized tank. Tag me if you do a build thread!

Yeah from what I read, it was really steep lol. Lesson learned. The local guy definitely softened the blow, I even got a big blue brute can out of it for the rest of the rock I didn't use lol. I also used 40lbs of caribsea live sand, so I don't expect to long of a cycle. My fw 55 took months. I haven't seen ammonia in a few days now, so I think it's helping quite a bit.
