Hi all,
New to R2R, and not quite a reefer yet. But seriously looking for a sleek aio, cube preferably. Something bigger than 10gal smaller than 30gal.
Through my searches I've been finding some, mostly out of my budget. I'm trying my best to keep my tank budget down as I know I'll be needing a light that'll cost about the same.
I keep defaulting back to innovative marine and thinking I could afford a 20 gal, but then remember I need a light for that one. then there's fluval sea 13.5 which is probably the quickest bang for my buck, and will probably go that route even though it's not quite as appealing as IM.
Definitely not in the market for Red Sea or any other 500-4000 setup.
I have no problem paying in the long run 50 here 100 there. But I'll be castrated if I come home with a 500 dollar tank.
I've even thought of buying a 20g long from walmart and diying some acrylic but dont have the experience to know how big the aio compartments should be.
I also found a sick deal on an eshops nano refuge which I almost pulled the trigger on, thinking I could just drill 2 holds in a tank, but found out I still needed some sort of hob overflow or drilled overflow. Which by then just those 2 things were $200+ bucks by themselves plus tank plus light. And I dont feel itll achieve the clean tidy hidden look I'm going for.
Unless someone tells me I can drill 2 holes in the bottom for supply and return pipe I'll feel really dumb for letting that deal go.
Anyway, fluval seems the best bang for my buck, has light that will suffice for now and clean looking. Just not the shape I want. Bigger wouldn't be bad either.
I really don't want the fw tank vibe.
I hope I've painted a picture and can bring someone back to day one of their reefing days and feed me some insite. It's also 2020 and most of the stuff I've found online for aio suggestions are from 2016.
Maybe just a poor Googler.
So hoping for creative:
2020 aio nano suggestions
2020 led light suggestions
Should I have got the fuge as theres a slick way to do it suggestions

IM for sure. I have the 30L and love it.

Don’t kid yourself. Get what you really want. You can always add on later. IM are beautiful tanks. Yes, you will start at $300 and after lights and add ones be over $800, bit you will be happy with what you have.

Find your local reef groups and wait for a used setup, they will often have lights/extra gear you need and someone wants to sell it as a whole set.

Personally love my IM25.

Have you considered Fiji Cube or Waterbox? Fiji has a 20 lagoon & a 22 gal cube & Waterbox has a 10 or 20 gal cube.

I have had a JBJ nanocube 24 for a little over a year but it is leaking & am upgrading to a Fiji 32 ext. Should be arriving soon hopefully. The things I don't like about the Biocubes or Nanocubes is the curved glass. It sounds/looks cool but is a PITA to clean. Difficult to use a razor/scrapper & also I always have coralline algae or regular algae grow on the rounder front corners. Straight glass is more practical & easier to deal with.

I have an IM 20 gallon that I use for freshwater and it is a great tank. IM is always very helpful on the phone if there is an issue or have questions. I had the nonpro version that came with 2 filter socks so I bought 2 media Baskets through InTank. Also the pump that came with it was garbage but I replaced with a Sicce. I use the IM Mightyjet 326 gph pump on my JBJ & it is a excellent pump. Just be aware it can't push water more than a few feet & can't be used in a sump application, IM told me it would burn out.

I would get the biggest tank you could reasonably afford. My 24 gallon cube was like 16-17 gals in display after you factor in volume displaced by rock & the AIO back section. I regret not getting a bigger tank off the bat. Anyways my IM tank is very nice & waterbox & fijicube look to be quality tanks after research. Good luck.

I made a diy aio 20 long and would be happy to share my design with you. Basically took the IM aio design. I use a single ai prime over it, two would be better. The tank and acrylic cost only about 80

Cvue tanks. Probably what you want.

If you like the fluval 13.5 AND Innovative Marine, look no further than the IM Nuvo Fusion 14.
Same size and dimensions, but sleeker in design.

If you're looking for an AIO Cube,
Waterbox has a nice 20 gallon for about 200.

Jbj also sells a 25 gallon cube+stand set for $555. $300 for the tank alone. Highly regarded company!

Would you be up for making your own? You can build exactly what you want.

Check my build thread.. although I need to update it soon. Plenty of info in the DIY section.. and lots of brilliant advise on here, you could save some money And get what you want.

Fiji Cube also has a DIY AIO Kit. You can buy the tank from Walmart or Petco at the dollar gallon sale and just add the AIO kit.
I was thinking about that, but a 40 gallon without low iron glass. Would you see a big difference in clarity?
