This is correct. Don't use a piercing saddle valve when feeding a booster pump. How is it your original vendor didn't pick up on this?

I never knew this although I’ve also never used a saddle valve. Is it because it can’t pass enough flow through the saddle valve?

Correct. And the pierced hole gets smaller over time as scale deposits around the opening.
