Looking at switching to BRS 2 part but am confused on what to buy. I already have 1-gallon jugs and am looking for Calc Mag and Alk to be maintained. Does it appear that this is a 3 part mix? https://www.bulkreefsupply.com/2-part-bulk-calcium-alkalinity-total-package-bulk-reef-supply.html

  • 6 Gallons of BRS Liquid Calcium Solution
  • 6 Gallons of BRS Soda Ash Liquid Alkalinity Solution
  • 2 Gallons of BRS Magnesium Mix for 2-Part Maintenance
What exactly should I buy to mix up and how do people use this product?

Calcium Chloride
Magnesium Sulfate - Is this not the same as Epsom salt?
Magnesium Chloride
Soda Ash

Is there a better solution I can make cheaper?

You can buy the individual chemicals for cheaper. Even BRS sells them in bulk. I have the weight of the BRS bulk chemicals for a 1 gallon mix saved off and will share them FWIW. Randy Holmes-Farley always suggests mixing the two magnesiums (see here for more). BRS 2 Part is based on Randy’s formula.

So do you mix up 3 parts as per the 3 pictures shown? Or do you mix calcium and the soda ash? How do you dose each of the 2 or 3 parts?

You cannot mix the Calcium and Alkalinity portions or they will precipitate (basically, coagulate). It is called 2 Part, but it is actually three separate solutions. I believe this is because folks generally require a regular daily, measured dosing of the Alkalinity and Calcium (manually or with a doser). The Magnesium, however, is typically dosed on an "as needed" basis.

FYI, I edited the post above to add the full BRS video.
