BRS 5 stage RODI with water saver question

Riddle me this. I have a five stage RODI system with the extra ro membrane for water saver. Installed it mid February. Always had TDS after ro before di of 2. Then post di 0. Now I'm getting after ro before di 3 and post di 1.


Thoughts?

I mean it's brown but only three quarters the way up. I ordered another canister and resin. Should be here Tuesday. Just used the last of my good water for ato and water changes.

Change out your filters. See if that brings it back down to 2. Could be that and/or your water in the summer is more chlorinated.

Never thought of that. On my order I'm replacing all but the ro membranes. Read that they last up to two years. Is that correct?

There was a good BRS video in which he talked about switching out the DI cartridge before it got completely brown. I forget the details other then one good option was to have a second DI stage after the first, this way you can completely deplete the old cartridge while still having the dwell time to filter properly. (A 3/4 brown DI stage is not working properly)

That being said if your RO stage was always 2, now it's 3 you may want to keep an eye on it or just go ahead and replace it. Your DI lasts a lot longer if you keep the RO stage as close to zero as possible. If you get much higher then 3, you may find it depletes your DI quickly. If you hit 4 your cartridges are going to go twice as fast. IMO I would rather invest the money in a top of the line Spectrapure membrane when/if you do replace it. I get 001 out with ~250 in.

Like you, I tried just doing the DI thing when my RO started to creep up. It just turned the new DI cartridge 3/4 brown the first weekend. I really do believe what they say about those Spectrapure RO membranes. I mean really I can get 001 without any DI stage, that is a pretty good filter. I've made a couple hundred gallons and only have 1/2" of brown on the new Di filter.

Recommended replacement of a RO membrane is a year I think. IMO if your equipment is clean and functioning properly you can use it until you see fit. I got almost 5 years out of my first one but should have replaced it at the 2 1/2 year point. If you were using it for human consumption, I would replace it every year and sterilize the equipment, just because there is no chlorine operating inside the filter.

A second ro membrane raises your overall tds (before di resin)

How is you water pressure? Those dual membrane systems require more.
Have you tried removing the flow restrictor and purging the membranes for a few minutes? That may help.

I don't know my tds prior to the di stage, but also will see tds creep up when the resin chamber gets to about 3/4 exhausted. It's a mixed-bed resin so one can still have color and capacity when the other is exhausted.
