So I bit the bullet and bought the BRS 15 pound (5 gallon) bucket. It's 10% off until 1/24/19, so if you're reviewing after, the math will be slightly off.

I did the math, and it came out to:

.75 lbs = 18$ or 24$/lb
1.5 lbs 27$ or 18$/lb
3lbs = 46.79$ or 15.67$/lb
15lbs = 188.09$ or 12.53/lb

For you math whizs, what's the point where going at 3 lbs (1 gallon bucket) starts to be more expensive? My math came out to be for 3 lbs, y1=47+15.66x and for 15lbs, 188+12.53x. The intersection point was about 44 lbs, or $725. Someone correct me, but basically that says after the third 15lbs bucket you're doing better... I figure if I use a pound a month, which will last me a year and 3 months... it'll be almost 4 years before I break even. Does that make sense? I think I'm approaching this wrong.

I'm trying to justify it, but really it comes down to not feeling like I am skimping on carbon. Anyone else try to rationalize this?

That's a lot more thinking than I have ever out into carbon...
I just bought 1 1/2 pounds, and figure that'll last me a year in my SPS dominant 240...

I'm not sure I follow your logic, but then again it is after midnight here :)

Do you use 1lb or carbon a month? That seems like a lot!

Either way, I would think if you need 44lbs, you would just overshoot it and buy three 15lb buckets and take the extra pound which comes out to around $565 (which is less than the $725 option I didn't follow above).

Well, I use the 1 gallon container at about $50, which lasts me a few months if I change the carbon in a single brs canister every other week, it may last 3-5 months. If you buy the 5 gallon bucket, I was just trying to see at what point it was cheaper than buying a new zillion and 1 gallon buckets. The 5 gallon bucket is normally like $200, but it's on sale, so I was trying to see when it breaks even with the higher initial cost. Like a lot of financial decisions, money not spent is almost always the rational decision, even if it's cheaper in the long run.

It just looked like a good math problem I've seen a million times, so thought it would be fun to try and justify an irrational hobby :)
