Let me see if I can explain the differences (similarities) between Randy’s and BRS’s stuff…..and Yes, they CAN be the same.
Randy’s Recipe 2 is using Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda). Because the solubility of baking soda isn’t that great, you make this solution up at half the equivalence as Recipe 1 (which uses Sodium Carbonate). Accordingly, just so you are mixing similar volumes, Recipe 2’s Calcium (Calcium Chloride), is also made up at half the strength as Recipe 1.
As far as the Alkalinity part, BRS sells both Sodium Bicarbonate (Recipe 2), and Sodium Carbonate (Recipe 1). With Randy’s Recipe 1 you have to “make” the sodium carbonate by “cooking” the baking soda at 300 degrees for an hour. BRS sells the sodium carbonate….no need to cook.
So to summarize, BRS’s two part using sodium carbonate as you alkalinity is the same as Randy’s recipe 1. If you use BRS’s sodium bicarbonate, that is the same as Randy’s recipe 2, but make sure you use half the amount of calcium chloride for the CALC part to equal Randy Recipe 2 Calc part. Hope that makes sense.
