So, here's how my evening/morning went:

I was sitting outside last night, enjoying the amazing Arizona weather while smoking a cigar. Suddenly I get an alert from my Apex on my phone. It said that my tank temperature had dropped below 77 degrees. I open the Apex app and yup, my tank has slowly been losing temperature. Please see exhibit "A":

My 120g tank, with 40g sump was being heated by a single 600w BRS Titanium heater and an Inkbird controller. I immediately go to to the tank and notice that the controller is "ON" and attempting to heat the tank. Luckily, I had just taken down my 40g tank, as we are moving it to another room. I happened to have a 200w heater from that tank. After verifying that both outlets on the Inkbird were working, I dropped the 200w heater into the sump and within 10 minutes, the temperature started to rise. Whew! Yeah, it took all night, but the temperature stayed in the 78 degree zone, and there weren't any indications of any stress to the tank (I mean, it only got to 76.9, so I wasn't expecting any issues).

So, today I went out and decided to be smarter about my heaters. Instead of a single heater, I'm using two heaters now. Instead of just the Inkbird being a failsafe, I got heaters with internal thermostats that I can set just outside of my high range in case they get stuck on. And, if one of them fails, the 300w one remaining should be able to keep the temp stable for some time.

In regards to the BRS heater, they have a 3 year warranty. I'm extremely disappointed that this $90 heater lasted less than a year. I contacted BRS, and since the 600w heaters are out of stock, they credited my account with reward points. I'm satisfied with how BRS handled this. I just wish the equipment lasted longer.

I know this has been a long post, but I think it's a great reminder to have redundancies set up, as well as having spare gear available for emergencies.

Contact their customer service department
Assure it’s the heater and not the controller

Yep...have an extra of everything because at some point it will break. At some point, I'll add another Apex to my supply of redundant equipment.

So it sounds like the titanium element was working as it should....the inkbird was the culprit......not the best controllers.

I use 2 redundant ranco temp controllers with non switched titanium elements.
Ive had more failures submerging eheim jagers tbh.

No, the heater failed. The Inkbird is working as it should. I even said I verified that the Inkbird was working properly. That's why my temp went up when I plugged in the 200w replacement heater.

Oh i see. I read it wrong. Thanks for clarifying.
Fwiw i use those hygger titanium tubes and they have been working great for years even without routine cleaning.

The 600w versions seems to fail more often. Glad you got it resolved. All my BRS heaters are close to 2 years old and still work great. I have multiple 300w and 1 100w

As stated in my post, I first verified the Inkbird was working properly, and it was.
I also stated that I contacted BRS and they credited me for the heater.
Gotcha
I could not read entire post until now as I’m at work but see you did your trouble shooting

In my experience heaters just seem to fail. Cheap/expensive i dont really notice a difference in failure rate. Have had cheap $20 300watt heaters last for years and expensive ones die in a year. Now i just make sure like you i always have multiple heaters on each tank and inkbird as an extra failsafe of overheating.

Glad BRS seemed to handle it well though.

this post with more reason makes me want to get a backup of everything :(.
It's funny how life seems to be listening. I had just been reminding myself that I needed to get another heater as a backup. The universe KNEW I needed the redundancy, but it was kind enough to wait until I happened to have taken down my 40g tank to have that extra heater.

With what seems to be a high failure rate of any brand heater i think that there should be a redundancy set up so a single failure can not crash your tank.

As you have found, redundancies are key in this hobby. I’m currently running 4 x 300w Eheims on my system. I am going to be switching to a titanium heat exchanger very soon. I will keep the heaters as a backup though should it fail.

2 glass heaters for me with internal temp control, connected to InkBird as a fail safe.

I rely on the heaters to figure out when to turn on and and the InkBird to them off if the water gets over a certain temp or alarm me if it goes below a certain temp.

There’s probably better ways but this one seems pretty foolproof.

…not applicable for 40 gallons systems but….
I moved from Arizona to Cleveland, and ditched using heaters (more or less) the last time a heater failure happened to me….
I had a large water volume and reasoned which is more likely to happen in Arizona, your fish freezing or a heater failing?
Anyway, just chiming in on my distrust of heaters on the whole
