Those anyone know the difference between the two recipes for the cal mix one says 2 1/2 cups the other says 1 1/4 cup. It says you will get a gallon using One or the other. I have been using recipe one 2 1/2 cup to a gallon of ro water.
Any ideas ?

I think the only difference is that #1 is supposed to be dosed with soda ash and #2 with baking soda. Different concentrations to keep the dosing balanced.

This is not true. First off the OP asked about the Calcium part, which is Calcium Chloride. The only instructions I have for this part is:

“Add 2½ dry measuring cups of calcium chloride to a gallon jug and mix with RO/DI or distilled water to create a full gallon of solution.”

I do not see that other instruction about the half dose. I can only guess that if you have dosing pumps that pump large volumes in short periods of time, you would want to use a more dilute solution to better control delivery.

As far as the volumetric differences in using soda ash (sodium carbonate) versus baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), the approximate differences would be 2 cups of sodium carbonate equaling 2 ¼ cups baking soda (as far as there carbonate equivalence.)

Hope this helps.

I've never read the BRS directions. I assumed it was the same as Randy's 2 part.

The dosing instructions are basically the same for each recipe, although any given aquarium will end up using about twice as much of recipe #2 as recipe #1 to add the same amount of calcium and alkalinity.

Save yourself the head aches and just use Kalkwasser in your ATO! I too was a 2 part daily doser for 2yrs. NO more! Now I use 3tbs of Kalk to 5g ato and my levels couldn't be more balanced.

It actually is Randy’s Two Part, with the following caveats:

Calcium Part: BRS Calcium chloride is a hydrated form (similar to Dow Flakes) and requires 2 ½ cups per gallon. If you use an anhydrous form of Calcium Chloride (Preston Driveway Heat, as an example), you only need 2 cups per gallon for the same equivalences.

AlkalinityPart: Randy’s recipe starts with Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate), where he gives you the option to turn it into Soda Ash (Sodium Carbonate) by baking it for an hour. You start out with 2 ¼ cups baking soda and after cooking it for an hour, you have approximately 2 cups of soda ash. Randy also gives you the option of just using Baking Soda if your pH is already high.

On the back of the brs cal bottle is has both recipes on the back. I don't manually dose I use 1.1ml dosing pumps one for cal and alk controlled by my apex. Was just asking since I was making a new batch yesterday during water change.

My cal and alk are stable I'm not having a problem was just looking for and answer as to why the have the two recipes.

So you don't dose anymore ? What size tank you have and how do you replace cal alk and mag if you no longer dose ? Those the kalk replenish them I did not know that. So you are saying all I have to do is add it to my ato bucket and I will no longer have to dose? More info please I never new this in all my years in the hobby.

by looking at you screen name i guess you have a nano. yes you can likely keep up with a nano or smaller tanks with just kalk. but when you get to bigger tanks dosing of a and b is necessary as kalk alone wont keep up. i use both kalk and a and b on dosers and do well.
