Hello all,

I just started dosing BRS two part alk and calcium.
I read somewhere that you need to dose equal parts. For example, if i dose 20 mL of alk then I need to dose 20 mL of calcium even though my calcium level would be enough with just a 10 mL dose? Is this true? Or can i dose more alkalinity than calcium?

What is the right way to go about doing this?

Thanks!

Many people say you need to dose same amounts equal but that is not the case. It will not hurt anything to dose little more or less of either. Eventually over time as tank matures you will find that the amounts of each alk and cal will end up being very close if 2 part is mixed properly at right levels. I think that’s where people get the idea that it has to be equal. Personally me at this moment am dosing 45ml alk and 60 ml cal to keep 7.7 alk and 450 cal. I use apex with dos and trident

Makes sense. Thanks for the input!
Can't wait to get the auto dosing started. Going to be dosing by hand for 2-3 weeks to get a feel for how much to dose and then using a dosing pump.

Yes good idea to find out how much your tank consumes over a day or few days. Then when it’s pretty consistent and your tired of dosing yourself use dose pump

You do not "need" to dose equal parts of my two part system (which BRS sells), but I would start off with equal parts to maintain alkalinity and slowly adjust calcium dosing if it is trending too high or too low.

You definitely don't have to dose the exact same amounts. BRS has a YouTube video explaining their two part cal and alk and they even say to adjust individual doasage depending on the consumption of your tank. Im sure you know but BRS also has a calculator on their website for dosing each one. If you had to dose them together I would assume they would include both alk and cal in the same calculation if you get what im saying. There are seperate calculations and mixes for a reason, you might need more or less of one another.
