BRS what's up with this?

Hey @silvernblackr35
I looked into this a little more with our product team (Zack, who you may have seen here on the forums from time to time). When we brought in the new pharma grade kalkwasser we also were developing some new packaging for our BRS brand of additives. When that packaging was printed and eventually used to package the new kalk, the instructions remained the same as the old non-pharma product. In reality, the new pharma grade kalk is roughly twice as dense as the older product, so the instructions should list a max saturation of about 1 1/4 teaspoons rather than 2 teaspoons. We have new packaging on the way to resolve this. That said, the perception that you're getting much less than advertised is our mistake. Had the mixing instructions reflected the correct amount, you probably wouldn't have those concerns. For what it's worth, I did also weigh a few packages in our warehouse and they were all spot on at 4 lbs. Hopefully that clears things up a bit, but feel free to send us a reply or PM if you have any questions at all :)

Side note- (For those who have been using the 2 tsp mixing instructions with the newer kalk) there is only so much kalk that you can dissolve into a single gallon of water, so even if you were to add too much, it would simply settle out at the bottom rather than increase the water's potency.
The 2 teaspoon mixing instruction is also on the Pharma Kalkwasser produc page on the BRS Website?o_O

Maximum Dosage
- 2 teaspoons per gallon of top off water

One of the limitations of kalkwasser is its 2 tsp. per gallon saturation point. Anything more than that will simply fall to the bottom of your reservoir and become essentially useless. If your aquarium is requiring more calcium and alkalinity added than what kalkwasser can keep up with there are a few solutions;

  • Start 2-part dosing
  • Increase your aquariums evaporation rate with fans
  • Vinegar method (experts only)

Thank you BRS for clearing it up. On a side note. Was this brought to BRS before being posted on the forum. I understand calling people out but you should first give them a chance to respond privately. BRS customer support has always helped me.

This BRS link says max saturation is 1 1/2 tsp https://www.bulkreefsupply.com/instructions/article/using-kalkwasser and the product page says 2 tsp. People have probably been wasting a lot of kalk powder for the past year.

The product pages as well as the instruction article that was linked previously now all have the correct mixing instructions. We really appreciate the reefing community pointing this error out to us!
