One thing I'm trying to wrap my head around is what is really so new about the idea of running a decent sized refugium and supplementing what is missing after testing? It doesn't seem like a "new method" at all, but just the older more natural way coming back in style again. The only thing different is it has got a company's name branded on it now. The only thing new is the ability to pay someone else to test for you.
Couldn't you have just left everything how it was and just stopped water changes as it stood? You traded one set of element supplements for another, switched to a different method of nutrient control, and are now sending off water samples vs doing more basic home tests. It seems as if you could have just stopped water changes and been fine as it was and still do Triton testing if it made you feel better.
