Hey all! So I went by Petco and they had a Japanese swallowtail Angel there. It was $70 which I think is a pretty good score for a 5” angel, so I took the chance and bought a Petco fish. I wanted to ask about a small bruise?? I think. She will be going through full qt coming from Petco. But I want to know if the bruise is anything to worry about or is it anything other than a bruise? Any opinions are much appreciated!

It’s basically just a smallish brown circle by the dorsal fin.

Could be the start of uronema.

Ooh thanks! That does look similar. I’ll get started on treatment ASAP.

Another possibility is a bacterial infection. We see these frequently on Butterflies and some Angels. The best treatment is NFG powder. This drug is fantastic. And it needs to be for this type of infection as once the sore turns "red" the clock is ticking and immediate treatment is required.

Thanks for the info! Would the seachem bacterial treatment work as well? I don’t have any NFG on hand, and it would take a bit to order in due to the time of year.

A wide spectrum antibiotic like Furan2 (which is in NFG) would be a somewhat close substitute.

I vote most likely infection, but quite possibly uronema. Uronema is a tough one, so best of luck.

DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT, get your main tank infected with Uronema, I did and it was a total loss.

Thank you for the ID.

Trust me, I won’t. I’ve been thorough a total wipeout too. I’m going to do like a 2 month qt on this guy.

I would treat for bacterial infection with NFG. Furan2 would be ok but add kannaplex and metro along with it to increase the effectiveness and ho if it us uronema.

Unfortunately, once the red sores appear from uronema treatment is usually not successful. That's why I would go with the best antibiotic I could get.

Best of luck for that awesome fish!

Thank you! I’ll be ordering some NFG today
