Brut containers and similar: leak proof?

I know these are popular and cheap. Someone mentioned in a thread that theirs leaked, and they ended up with quite a bit of water on the floor. Is there any way to tell that one is going to go bad, or do they just fail?

Are you referring to a brute trash can? I used a 32 gallon brute for mixing salt and I didn't have any issues but mine bowed quite a bit and it definitely made me nervous.

Mine are 6 years old and without problems. I can't imagine how they could leak unless they are punctured by something!

I agree. I can't imagine immediate failure. Mine bowed ALOT when filled most of the way, so I just didn't ever completely fill mine.

Iv'e had my my brut cans for a long time . No issues they are a good buy even if they aren't exactly cheap.

If they get dragged on the pavement when moving, then they can wear thin on the bottom. They may develop a leak that way. Mine are on dollies and are probably 10 years old. No leaks at all.

I have my 44g brute on a dolly. I fill it up all the way with no concerns. The only way I could see one failing is by what @Fin stated.

Yeah, I'm talking about the Brute trash cans. As for them being "cheap", it's all relative. I think a blue barrel would be preferable, but they cost quite a bit more. It's good to know that I can only partly fill them.

Mine gets filled on Friday and it's empty by the following Friday and it repeats like that weekly for years. It never moves though just sits on a stand in the basement. I currently have 4 holes drilled in it. One at the top for a float, 3 a few inches from the bottom for manual water change, auto water change and one float. Never had an issue.
