Im thinking of buying more brute trash cans. Ive got one 44 gallon for ro water. Another 20 gallon for limewater. Now im thinking of buying another 3 44 gallon trash cans to do 150 gallon water change at once. Since its better to add the whole bucket of salt at once for having a consistant mix, is 3 brute trash cans enough for 1 pail of instant ocean?

If you're concerned with salt mix homogeneity, try getting the 200 gallon box of IO. The box has 4 individual bags. Each bag should mix up without any concerns of homogeneity or salt mix separation.

Technically, you're not adding the whole bucket to 1 container you'd still have to split into 3 different buckets.

I made salt in two 44 gallon brute cans plumbed together with bulkheads, and a powerhead driving water from one to the other, mixing them. :)

Like folks mentioned above, I used bags from the 200 box. Usually took close to 2.

I bought a 50 gallon olive container off craigslist for 40 bucks. I cleaned it and installed an RODI float switch at the level a bag of salt would mix appropriately to. When I make saltwater I don’t even have to measure. I also have it in the house (laundry) to avoid temperature extremes and have it plummed so I can do a water change in minutes. If you make it easy for yourself you’re much more likely to do it.

Was the water about 1/2" from the top of the brute? I get 1 bag at 35 ppt about 1/2" from the top.

I din't measure it carefully at all. I'm sure it varied a lot.

A 50g bag of IO makes perfect salinity when filled almost right up to the top of a 44g Brute - I mean nearly all the way to where the lid will not fit on without displacing water. If it is not possible to fill them up that high, then you might have a little bit left over.
