I'm going through about 5g of top off a day on my 180gish system. The wall my tank is against is an exterior wall. I would like to have a larger reservoir tank for auto top off out there. Something in the 40-60 gallon range so I can get 7-10 days or so out of it. I was thinking of using a blue food grade storage barrel but I'm worried about light penetration/algae. I got to thinking about using a brute trashcan. The only con I see is the lid not being sealed.

That side of the yard gets a sliver of sun a day. Probably 2 hours max as its between me and my neighbor. Which would be the better option? I've see black storage barrels but they are a little pricey.

Thanks for any input.

You can paint the outside of the food grade barrel but the brute will work too i would imagine. The only thing I'd be worried about is critters and/or bugs getting into the barrel.

Yeah black widows are nuts around my house too. The the garden would be blowing the leaf blower ect back there.

Never thought aboit painting the barrel though, thanks!

I found a black "pickle" barrel that I use.

It has a screw on lid with a seal.

I have a float valve in the lid.

So I can make 55gal overnight.

Looks like this, but mine is black
