Hey guys I have a 35 gallon brute with a eheim jager, a powerhead, and a mighty jet. Oddly for some reason the water inside smells slightly as if burnt, and or odd? should I worry about this. Nothing in the container is burnt. I do not understand?

If it smells like burnt toast, you might want to visit your doctor. If it smells more plastic take a cup of the water and move to another room and take a sniff. Maybe it's coming from something near by. If your water does smell funny I'd do a vinegar wash of the trashcan for a few hours and rinse.

A doctor?

How long have you been mixing water in these containers? Are you bleaching or otherwise cleaning them between batches? I'm looking at my own practices with relation to water changing and I'm seeing what looks like small amounts of dark sludge or mold at the waterline or the shaped "corners" of the trashcan bottom. Maybe a similar problem?

Its brand new. I did use some silicon on the outside to mount something could be that curing. I used the water from it to do a water change in a tank earlier. I didnt see any bad effects.

I don't think silicon would give you problems. Might just be something that will go away after a while and a few months of use.

Last time my water smelled burnt it was also boiling from the heater going bad while mixing.

Sorry, I'm in the medical profession. Smelling burnt toast can be a sign of a seizure.
Its not burnt toast specifically. It is any odd smell or taste really. A bunch of strange stuff, and usually immediately before the seizure.... why you would say that no idea as epilepsy is horrifying. If im here, and didnt mention that. It would have been a heck of a aura to have without seizing.

Have you checked the equipment to make sure that they're all running? Sometimes equipment can give off a burnt smell if the motor runs dry too long...Where is the water station located?

I think that MaxxuM is mistaking horses for zebras :p...

I work in psychiatric medicine and research so I work with horses that think they are zebra's ;) Second year syndrome I guess. If I see a mole I automatically wonder if it has changed shape or color recently.
