Did Fluconazole Kill all of your Bryopsis?

  • Yes

  • No

  • I'm treating my tank with it now.

  • I love Bryopsis and I'm mad that everyone is killing it.

Yeah it's been mentioned or listed over 53 times(at last search) throughout the thread with the first time on page 3 I believe but unless they are R2R sponsors we were not going to make it part of the FAQs. We have not all got it from the same place either but if one of those companies would like to step in and help support our great reefing forum,I would be glad to add them to it. Like I've said in past posts,I think we've sent some of those companies a ton of business.

Agree and makes total sense !! Just thought of asking you :D

Thank you, I have already read all the treat but Im scared to try bleach in the tank, now trying Vibrant.
FWIW, we had great success with Vibrant clearing our tank of dino strands...clean tank since beginning of Nov. We have both Ostreo species and Amphidinium species. Fingers crossed it will work for you!

Following this thread with interest....so great to see this big help in the hobby...AND so I'll know about it should we ever need it!

This is a totally side discussion but wanted to share my thoughts :-

1. Fluco - cleaned all GHA , byropsis and Turf like algae
2. Vibrant - Keeping the tank really spotless without having to use even glass cleaner and nitrates quite low .
3. Microscrubbing - When combined with vibrant , took care of all diatoms in my tank and other nasty brown strands ..

I use all the 3 above and seems like they work in perfect conjunction together and along with a few trochus and Turbos, I do not have any noticeable algae or slime growth in the tank !!

Tank is wayy too clean for my acros that i have resorted to nitrate dosing, oyester feast and rotifeast dosing daily which i used to do only fortnightly and feeding of mysis and LRS 4-5 times a day.

Abhishek

I wish it would have been the same for me. Just my luck of course my tank had to be different. :(

@NCreefguy - may be you can look into microscrubbing if you have tried every other method like bleach , H2O2 , vibrant and dino-x.
I know some have reported success in containing them if not erradicating them completely.

Abhishek

@Rick.45cal mentioned micoscrubbing to me a while back. The way that my sump is set up I can use a mesh sock, lower the water level in the sump and it will send millions(guessing :D)of tiny bubbles to the dT. The way rick explained it though,I'm not sure if my bubbles were tiny enough.I tried this for a while, but it just looked like there were more bubbles on the brown slime than usual so I moved on to another method.I'm still trying the bleach method(well I'm using a little less than what it calls for)and so far it is definitely knocking the dinos down. I've dosed some mb7 just to try and keep some good bacteria going while doing this. Without a doubt there is less brown slime in my tank right now.

So, I cant help but wonder.... Thinking about all of the vaccines and such used around the world to combat disease, and how they sometimes result in a "super strain" of that particular pathogen, I wonder are we playing with fire and dooming the entire next generation of reefers with Super Incurable Bryopsis?!?! Hahaha! (Just kidding, dont throw tomatoes!)

Not to derail the thread and I really hope you get over the dino infestation .. 3 things I found makes a difference in microscrubbing :-

1. Using a powerful pump like coral life luft pump
2. Tried with both Lee's and Oceanic wooden air stone and found oceanic to produce wayy finer bubbles.
3. Keeping teh ait sone further from the return so as to allow only finest bubbles to travel to the DT . Using a flat nozzle helps to create more pressure and hence finer bubbles but your return pump should be able to handle it ..

Abhishek

Wasn't byropsis already incurable before this ? :D:D:D

My last bits of bryopsis and all GHA disappeared 2 weeks into the treatment. I see 1 or 2 tiny stalks of bryopsis attached on some rocks. I am on Day 18 now, but I am worried once I do water change and remove fluco the bryopsis might come back. Has it come back for anyone, after successful treatment with fluco?

If the treatment is successful(meaning killed it all, even the roots) then bryopsis won't come back unless you reintroduce it into your tank. If you still have some stalks left, you can either do a water change and run another treatment or just add another dose of Flucon to finish off what bryopsis you have left.

Just a question, you all been adding cuc to your tanks, can I assume porcelin crabs will be ok to add too whilst fluco is in the system still, lfs has a couple that I wouldn't mind having.:)

Thanks. By another dose of fluco do you mean 1 more 200mg capsule in my 80g or the whole dose of 9 capsules without doing a water change?

If your nitrates aren't high like you need a water change, then I would just add another full dose of 9 capsules. If you were treating your fish with Flucon you could dose those 9 capsules every day for 10 days straight and it still be considered "safe" for fish. This doesn't take into account for corals or inverts but there have been some people who ran another full treatment without doing a wc between them.

I haven't seen anyone mention porcelain crabs yet but hopefully someone will chime in soon.

By the way I've been bryopsis free for awhile now...just too scared to say it....but now I'm not BRYOPSIS FREE

Thank you, today is the dose no 6 but I still can see my dinos reproducing but my bubble algae is dying and my corals look happier but I dont realy think its doing something for dinos, did you make water changes during adding Vibrant ? How much doses it took to get rid of them? I have ostreopsis ovata :(
