so thought I would give a couple month update, treated back when this thread was still new and my bryopsis all melted away in 15 days or so, now its back with a vengeance however. So I just ordered more, I'm hoping maybe it didn't all die last time because of my lighting, to many shadowed areas in the tank with my old lighting, seems like it doesn't die without proper light on it.

There have been people that dosed with clams and anemones although I can't remember who right off. Here's a search of anemones and clams being mentioned to help narrow it down....

Harsh on sps???
What are you talking about???
No effect on anything in a sps reef tank. Do your homework please before you say something.

In my tank which is way different than yours, fluc killed my garf bonsai faded and closed up 3 varieties of cephastra, caused all 8 anemones to shrink and hide. Some have been in same place for 5 yrs till now. First treatment lasted 14 days before I did a WC. Waited 2 weeks and gha exploded from nutrient load so hit it again, will go 21 days since sensitive sps are gone

Same unfortunately. I was with the early doser and cleared within a week. Been months free but now seeing fronds appear on the odd rock. Really annoying as I thought I was rid [emoji21][emoji21]

im not sure if the fluconazole killed your sps or the high PO4 in your case might have doomed them. I did have a colony of ice fire enchinata that did brown and die out during the process but i know it was a mix of the alk going up and the PO4 that went to the .06 range when its usually at .02
Not doing water change and no skimmer will make a dent in those sensitive sps colonies. Im just not sold yet that it was the flucanazole itself but the way we use the treatment. no matter what to me it was worth losing one colony to get rid of the algae. the algae cost me more in damage and clean up every month than the colony of sps

IYO is this bryopsis I used flucanozole as preventative just in case if need better pictures let me know. Thanks

Doesn't kill them but they are not thrilled, little harsh on sps

I didn't find it to be harsh on SPS what so ever. Look back a few days ago on this thread I posted pictures of my SPS. That was right smack in the middle of treatment.

I did find that last treatment when I stopped skimmer that they didn't like that. This treatment I just tuned it much dryer and problem solved.

What have people used to remove excess nutrients after die off? WC is helpful but limited reduction, could do weekly but a lot of work

Does the tank have a nutrient problem in the first place? The nutrients released shouldn't be a huge deal in a healthy tank.....N and P both get used by everything that's still growing. N also gets continuously burned down by denitrification. I'd say the tank's out of balance if you find that those processes can't handle the "load" during this transition. My guess would be that you have either too many fish, too few coral or that you feed too much. Maybe some combination of all three. But that's a guess!! :)

well yesterday I basically broke the tank down and reset it. 95% water change. Took most of the sand bed out and rinsed well, put back about 1/4 inch layer to keep stuff happy. Did a 50/50 peroxide dip on the frags and syringed all the rock with the same mix. ( could not dip due to corals and nems on the rocks) I did kill off a ton of little worms ( not sure if they were bristles as they were small) One observation is ALL of my CUC are gone with the exception of one little snail. Not sure what was going on with that
I may run another dose of fluconazole if I still see GHA. This is such a frustrating hobby. Off to the LFS to get a new CUC.

Ouch! CUC being gone indicates a possible HAB (harmful algae bloom; toxic) was in effect. Too bad you wiped out all those worms....the tank will surely take longer to cycle back up to normal, if there are some left.

What have your NO3, PO4 test numbers been like lately as well as before the bloom? How about stability of other test numbers?

the Bryopsis story over here.

I have a little tank running. This is a sera 130 led cube (130 liters dunno how much gallon that is)
I had an outbreakof almost everything . Bryopsis hair algae cyano dinoflagelates .
Mindset whent to the freezing point . But after some working the parameters the cyano vanished.

I started the flucanozole treatment 4 days ago. I used 8 capsules of 200mg for 130 liters. Strangely i actualy cant sea any results yet since may lights are out due to the dinoflagelates. Monday wil be the great reveal.
I hope this one helps. or else it will be a greater dose.

Luckely this happend in the small tank and not the big one (whn we still had it , was good for about 700 liters)

i will be posting a pre and after picture as soon as i can ;)

Can you post your current test numbers and comment on how those compare with number before the algae bloom?

If you have a thread of your own where you've been tracking this, can you link it here or PM me?

If I stabilize will these come back?

There seems to be some evidence that they will.

Hopefully. I am in the same boat as you but due to a power outage. Some of mine are, some stopped worsening and others didn't make it. SPS are very finicky and need complete stability. Best of luck!

Hadn't heard of side-effects like this...not good.

Bit of an update and feedback, not good news [emoji849]

My bryopsis is back [emoji33][emoji33][emoji33][emoji33]

So just to fill in the gaps, dosed back in Feb this year. Fluconazole cleared all my bryopsis in a week, but the last few days I've seen fronds appearing on 2 rocks.

I cant rule introducing this via frags I've recently purchased but there was no visible signs on any plugs.

Pretty gutted tbh, thought i had rid of this pest for ever. One thing is I'm not touching it ill see how it develops and if it comes back in force redose. As many others will know manual removal just spreads.

Keep you updated

Necessary, repeated doses of fluconazole as part of a maintenance routine to keep a system clear is definitely not what we're after here. :(

Meds can't be a replacement for husbandry – even if husbandry alone can't cut it.

I've missed big chunks of this thread....has anyone looked at husbandry issues along with medicating or instead of medicating?

Noticed mine coming back again. I have done 2 treatments... ugh.

Sorry to hear it!

And ditto my last comment. :( One treatment is "bad enough" since we shouldn't have to do any.

Any chance you opened a thread to look at this issue before/during the treatment? (pls link)

I had a colony of Acro RTN around day 8. I'm sure it was not the treatment it's self, possibly from shutting the skimmer off. Maybe because I had so much and the die off spiked nutrients. I can't really know. I also didn't have any cheato to help control the spiking nutrients, I do now.

I'm on day 8 of second treatment and kept skimmer on but much much dryer. Seems to be working just fine with my skimmer running no problem. Just about all gone, only thing that remains are some stems and roots. Things are going very well with this second treatment, nothing seems to be affected negatively at all except the bryopsis. In fact, my display looks better than it has in a long time.

:( ...about the acro and all.

Yet another second treatment and more coral death. It feels like an awful lot of similar coincidences to just call them all coincidence. I think that's called a pattern. Hm.

Cool well hope there is no ill effect of 3 doses I see nothing wrong do far

3? :( Glad it's not hurting anything else, but if it's taken that many doses....all of which go down the drain and mess up the environment (even more)....maybe something else is contributing to the problem to require so many doses?

What's the record of doser per tank so far?

NC noted an anecdote (see below) where a tank got dosed every day for 6-7 days straight, but that was on accident.

What's the most times anyone's dosed a tank, or heard of a tank being dosed, on purpose?

(These meds are supposed to be dosed once to eliminate the problem....as a final step after all other problems are rectified....resistance is going to become an issue with too many repeat doses.)

You should be okay...There has been someone else who dosed about 7 days in a row before he realized what he had done and noticed things being stressed out. If you see anything that seems off to you, just perform a water change and let things settle back down for a while.

If I haven't said it before, thanks for taking care of your thread like you have!!! It takes time, but it's worth it!!!!! THANKS!

And another required repeat... :(

Can you also link your own thread here where you've recorded all your test results and what you've tried so far? Include all your system details if that's not already there too.

I don't mind helping out. I get a lot of pm's from those who might not want to make posts openly about having bryopsis but it's okay. People shouldn't feel embarrassed about it because it's just part of our hobby. I've been busy lately but Jackie and others have helped out in the thread a ton.

Sorry if I missed this somewhere, but I couldn't find it on the first 6 pages of the thread. Where did you all find the Fluconazole? Everywhere I'm seeing needs a prescription.

Just a quick question. I used this at the correct amount 3 days ago, the GHA seems to be getting longer... did this happen to anyone else?

So second question. How would I go about getting a prescription? I know there are other drugs out there that we use that for furry pets require a prescription. I don't have any other pets, do I need a vet?

Finally done with 3rd treatment, bryopsis all gone, a few patches of gha, did 25% WC, everything looks much happier , skimmer running , pulling yellow skimate, running carbon filter to clean up water. Running gfo during treatment helped as well as a 10% WC at day 14 helped to get nutrient load out. Replacement water had fluc in it. After first treatment had a huge gha spike but less each time
