Bryopsis Cure: My Battle With Bryopsis Using Fluconazole

Did Fluconazole Kill all of your Bryopsis?

  • Yes

  • No

  • I'm treating my tank with it now.

  • I love Bryopsis and I'm mad that everyone is killing it.

@prsnlty Probably best to start skimming in your situation. About day 3 is when I started skimming again but most of mine was also gone (largely because it got eaten) by day 4. Now that you are having massive die off it might be wise to skim as much stuff out. I don't think I would be afraid to dose more fluconazole down the road if I absolutely had to. I'd probably try and get as much junk out before it breaks down into more PO4 and NO3.

And more....
Some locations it's nearly gone

Yeah that's what I was thinking that.... bummer though, I wanted to soak that skimmer in some vinegar while it was taking a timeout hahaha. Oh well I'll just take it off line later on when my tank becomes clean again

Wow, thank you! :D Is your youtube name the same as on r2r? It's hard to tell sometimes because YouTube account names aren't always the same as forum names

I turned my skimmer on after 4 days. I did not want nutrients climbing too high. I also read a couple of messages where the user did not turn off their skimmer, so I decided to turn on mine.
I thank You! Agreed, I am going to wipe the gunk of, put the cup back on.

HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!! I have GHA and only GHA in my tank. On third day after dosing I said to myself, hmm, looks like thr GHA stopped growing. Tonight (4 days after treating) I saw my first grey hairs, on the algae of course. I wish I could sit in front of my tank for the next day 10 days watching it scream in anguish and die.

This last picture Acanthastrea. It flipped off a rock upside down face to face with my meteor shower Cyphastrea. Some nice heads died back but hoping they recover. The cyphastrea hs some minor damage. Its also has a stronger sting than a species of invasive clove polyp. I used to think it was Knopia. You can see this "purple clove" on the rocks above and below the frag rack near center of the tank.

The med worked beautifully! I rate this a success even tho its not 100% gone 16 days. Im going to stretch my WC out to 21 days one a single dose. Also note that poor pagoda and starry GSP both almost choked completely out by the bryopsis.

And no loss of life that Ive seen. Coco worm, 2 pepps, cleaner, hermits, snails.

Ive dosed Vibrant twice. First was 1 day prior to Fluco and second was 8 days into treatment. Wate is crystal clear. Also dosed phyto 2 times.

@stevo01 I have clusters of that same clove polyp. My Pbt likes to nip at them which causes them to spread. I use a triation syringe and drop vinegar into their mouths. Makes them melt away. But don't do too much each day because it can cause a bacterial bloom like any carbon dosing. My rule is to minus 10ml from my daily carbon dosing when I'm on attack ;)

Message to those in the UK looking to use Fluconazole, I ordered mine from https://www.payless-petproducts.com/fluconazole200.html on 2nd Feb, used standard shipping...

and it was delivered today 9th Feb. No issues with customs and it was delivered by Royal Mail Special delivery this end... :D

I pulled all my bryopsis out by hand 3 weeks ago (big mistake!!!) so i'm now just waiting for it to grow back fully so I can dose the Fluconazole and kill it once and for all! :)

why am I waiting?.... well, for me its common sense, I look at bryopsis as a weed like you get in the garden and fluconazole as the weed killer.... The algae needs to uptake the fluco into its system to destroy it from within, and to do that it needs its ferns intake, and what normally makes it grow, ie nitrates and phosphates and light to work as normal to do so. I don't think treating bryopsis that's had its ferns/leafs removed before treatment would work very well, and I won't pull and bryopsis even if it looks dead after dosing, just incase it still needs to uptake the fluco (if it still can ) :)

I was also previously running a high salinity and Mg to rid it too, so I have slowly brought these down to "normal" levels too. I can't wait for this weekend..... when I'll dose fluco at 20mg per gallon :)
