GFO Does not remove the medicine, Use 200 mg 1 week another 200 mg the other week without any effect

Correct gfo will not remove the meds

Flyconazole does NOT kill Bobbitt worms if anyone was wondering! However almost a month since treatment and no more bryopsis!

First I want to thank NCreefguy for starting this thread that some how ended up as a Facebook suggestion. I was getting depressed looking at my tank and now I'm watching that crap fade away. Thanks to everyone posting their tips and experience with everyone.

It's 14 days and tomorrow I'll do a wc and probably dose again and keep nuking this crap, I want it gone. I've seen no ill effects and I dose nopox daily, following a scaled dose to no3 levels which are at 2 or less.

That's how I found this thread. After a bad experience after a move and algae explosion I wasn't caring about tank that much. This thread brought life back to me and my tank. I'm feeling like I did when I first started 6 years ago. Big ole thanks to everyone!

What are some things that are missing data wise? Ie... are there any questions you guys want answered but haven't been tackled?

I am in a position to take some gambles here. I have a 4 month old rig. 40b with 20 long sump. 250w 14k MH. I dose vodka daily. and my skimmer runs 24 hours a day.

why I can take gambles. I brought in a potters angel who had velvet. lesson learned, LFS says QT'ed in copper for 6 weeks is a lie. dont trust them. He is dead (potters angel not the LFS guy). I have a fishless rig. Everything is in the hospital tank for 76 days from today. I am giving it all the cupramine ich treatment.

current stocking is:
nasty green stars on a island
kenya tree
pink acro frag
superman monti
pink/purple monte
some acans
a few zoas
black tube
sun coral
a bleached birdsnest I am trying to rescue for a friend

All small pieces, not too much risk.
I also have the standard clean up crew:
turbos
ceriths
turbos
Hermits
2 serpent stars
emerald mithrax
cleaner shrimp
lettuce nudi (poor fellow im going to decimate his food source. Please if any of you in the Jacksonville fl area would like this tiny fellow and have the algea for him to graze on. even in a scrubber let me know. After the bryopsis is gone id like him to live)

I have bryopsis and red wire algea only at the moment

Thus far I have decided
No manual removal before treatment. I am letting this evil grow.
WC first, then dose 5mg per gallon
disolve fluconazole in that days dose of vodka to test for solubility
no skimmer 4 days
12 hr daily light cycles

I am also considering a maintenance solution.
My carbon (vodka), fresh ro/di, and fluconazole in one solution dosed daily if i can figure out the correct amounts I would need of each for a safe effective daily or weekly regimen.

Let me know if any of this has been covered already or if there is a important piece you would like someone to gamble on.

5mg per gallon probably won't be enough to kill your bryopsis. Everyone has been using 20mg per gallon. I believe a couple of people tried 10mg per gallon and it worked for one but not the other. If you have around 50 gallons of total water volume,I would use 1000mg in a one time dose, then sit back and watch the bryopsis die.

I used 10mg per gallon in a new tank with very little bryopsis and it didn't kill all of it. And I mean a VERY small amount of bryopsis. Definitely need the 20mg per gallon.

NCreefguy,
I'm in the middle of the eighth day and about all that is left is in tight areas of matted Zoas. It's just my two cents but I overdosed a little. I used the 20mg per gal. dose you recommend but intentionally didn't allow for the rock and DSB. If I ever redose I'll deduct for the rock and sand which consume at least half my tank and sump space.
I also turned up my lighting gradually about 20%. Looking back I think this was dangerous and when those Platy frags died on the fifth day I immediately turned the skimmer on lightly and turned the lights back to normal. The only loss were the small frags which were the last coral added to my tank (about 8 weeks ago) All the other lps were ok but I had noticed that their feeders which are always out were mostly starting to pull in. After the skimmer and lightning changes were made, everyone's feeders came out again.
For what it's worth I thought I would mention these mistakes that I made to show how close I think you have the dose at 20mg per gallon is and should not be exceeded by much. I definitely wouldn't turn your LED lights up, maybe even down a little.
In my opinion the skimmer running light after the 5th day is not taking the meds out as they are still working after 8 days.
Everything working great now but I nearly had a disaster by not following your instructions exactly.
Also, have a huge sea hare had for a few years and he's still doing great! I was worried about him a little at first.

Yeah you always need to account for the water displaced by your rocks, sand and equipment when considering what your total water volume is and what dose you want to use. We added a note about bryopsis dying off quicker in the higher lit areas and mentioned adding light to the shaded areas(not overall) of your tank would help those areas but it's not needed for the treatment to be a success.

If you're in day 8 with just a little algae left,it shouldn't be too much longer before it's all gone.:)

What an amazing thread. And thank you all for the hard work it takes to keep it going... If you look at the sheer number of views, you've really helped out to stop what Ive called "2016, The year of the Bryopsis"

Im about to pull the trigger and place my order today. Would you mind bringing me up to speed on the findings. (yes Im getting nervous) I have a lot of odd and unusual things In my humble tanks.

Snail and worm die off? Including flat worm duster etc. (cuc seems rare)

Other algaes killed besides Bryo and GHA. Some algaes are quite toxic (that's how some fish get their poison in the wild) and is likely the Vibrant Bi-kill problem.

Bivalve deaths noted? (big for me)

Shrimp and amphipod deaths?

How is removal of the meds by carbon being proven. (Im prepping a canister/w carbon and Lots of water)

Am I being a chicken in dosing the full dose over 3 days rather than all at once?

I would like to note that even half way throught my second dose to kill gha that b the gha in my sump has been unaffected. During the first dose I had left my sumps lighting off. During the second dose the lighting has been left on 24/7. Can anyone add their experience with killing off gha in their sump?

Nothing wrong with being nervous about dosing your tank. Just shows that you care about your reef and it's inhabitants.

I didn't notice anything in my tank being negatively effected by the treatment other than the bryopsis and gha. My tangs and snails seemed more interested in picking at the dying algae than they ever had before. No shrimp or amphipod death.I don't have any clams/bivalves but there are several people that has treated their tanks with clams and saw no signs of stress.

Clams...

As far as carbon removing the meds,we don't think that it does or at least not fully. @prsnlty or someone posted a study showing that carbon wouldn't remove it. I'll try to find it or she can re-post it. Removing the carbon during treatment is just one of the initial steps that was done to give the treatment it's best chance at success. I removed carbon and gfo in the beginning but now we are seeing that neither one really effect or inhibit the treatment. GFO may actually aide the treatment by removing the po4 released during the algae die off. It's been and continues to be a learning process.

20mg/gallon all at once is what has been working the best. You can try to spread out the doses if you want but I always suggest sticking to what works. Do you really want your algae to build a resistance to it by easing into the treatment? :D (Just throwing that out there.I don't think that would really be the case)

Other than bryopsis and gha, no other algae or macros have been effected. It does not work on bubble algae, cyano, dinos or hydroids. Mainly just a bryopsis and gha killer! :)

Taking your skimmer offline or removing the cup for the first few days seems to work the best so you don't remove too much of the meds in the beginning of the treatment. Some have skimmed the entire time and still had success, some had to retreat due to removing too much of the meds. All tanks are different and this a YMMV situation.

I would just change your water before you start the treatment since you won't be changing it the 2-3 weeks during treatment.Dose the tank all at once, watch your nutrient levels and watch the algae die.

This "Treatment" and thread is the biggest game changer since I don't know what...

d2mini Had gha in his refugium/sump and the treatment cleared it up.

I'm not sure why yours wouldn't be dying off. Did you run a full dose second treatment?
