This bad boys just came in [emoji4]

So just double checking I have about 65 galling how much do I dose ? Should one capsule a day work ?

20 mg per gallon I believe was the recommendation, and that is all at once not daily.

So at least 1300 mg dosed at one time. if you have 200mg pills do 7 of them.

My results of using fluconazole to treat Derbesia (not GHA or Bryopsis)

It has now been 32 days since I first dosed 4000mg of fluconazole into my 180gal (approx. 200gal total water volume) and 18 days since the second dose (also 4000mg). While not the same results as people with bryopsis or GHA seem to be getting, overall I am quite happy with the decrease in algae.

Going from almost 100% of every rock surface covered in algae to approximately 20-30%? Algae remaining is not white or looks like it is dying however it does appear to still be slowly receding (don’t know how long this will continue). It could also be coincidence but coralline algae growth has exploded, previously I had lots growing on the glass and wave makers, since the derbesia started dying coralline seems to be taking its place on the rocks (but is still light enough to not be that noticeable in pics).

Another thing I noticed is the derbesia appeared to start getting grey tips around day 3 however the grey tips started to go away around day 14 and did not return during the second dose. And at no time did the tangs or snails appear to be able to eat it (and still don’t) which is the opposite of what people are reporting with bryopsis and GHA.

- No water changes since the first dose (will likely still wait a bit longer before doing a WC incase the last bits do keep dying).
- Skimmer on with no cup and overflowing for the first dose, completely turned off for the second dose (skimmer has now been on and skimming properly for 3 days).
- Reactor with carbon & po4 remover turned off (turned back on with fresh Seachem Seagel today).
- ATS taken offline and screen left to die off to avoid re-introducing any derbesia (it will be left offline at least until I do the next WC).

Water parameters (Salifert test kits):
Nitrate:
Before – 0ppm
After first dose – 1ppm
After second dose – 1ppm
Phosphate:
Before – 0ppm
After first dose – 0.05ppm
After second dose – 0.05ppm
Alkalinity throughout – 8dHK
Calcium throughout – 450ppm
Magnesium throughout – 300ppm

Livestock:
Lots of trochus snails (they are breeding so I have way more than I can count of varying sizes)
A few of trubo snails
Abalone
Long spine urchin
2x coral banded shrimp
2x maxima clams
Blue tang
Bristle tooth tang
Darwin fairy wrasse
Yellow tailed damsel
2x clown fish
Coral is a mix of soft coral (mushrooms, zoas and leathers) and LPS (favites, trachy, hammer, torch, acan and lobo).

Deaths:
During the treatment I have not seen the long spine urchin once. I would usually see it once every couple of days and it appears to have disappeared a day or two after dosing and has not been seen since. This is possibly due to the fluconazole.
I also lost 1 small hammer colony (approx. 5 heads) and 1 small lobo during treatment. However I had been having issues with my coral and before dosing I lost multiple colonies as well as almost killing many others for still unknown reasons so I do not attribute this to the fluconazole.

Interesting. I lost a Hammer, Pulsing Xinia and my long spine urchin has lost many of it's spines and has not moved since day 2. ( it was very active before treatment)
I still have tons of GHA but we have just hit a week into treatment.

Some people is having different results. Maybe they are using fish flucanazole, tablets or other types of flucanazole and not the capsule type. We need to find out those having issue with this treatment, what type of flucanazole they used. Mine are in caplet form, 100% 150mg of flucanazole for human subscription. Bryopsis gone in 18 days, probably due to lower dosage (8 x 150mg) instead of 1600mg as recommended (80G total water volume).

That is interesting about the urchin as I am pretty sure that mine has gone missing due to the treatment. For my hammer loss I really wouldn't say it was because of the treatment. I've had some really bad issues with my coral in the month or two leading up to dosing and most of my losses were hammers, so I think I may have a parasite or something, but I have 1 hammer left (large colony of approx. 15 heads) and all but 1 or 2 heads on that one seem to be doing well still.

Week 1 into dose 2 for "roots" in shaded areas. Seems to be working slower this time. So far I've seen no change. Will be riding this dosage out. No additional lights were added as I don't have a way to hook them up to where they would shine directly on it. I am not running my skimmer at all no carbon no gfo.

Day 5. My Rock Flower Anemone is acting weird not fully inflating like normal. Could be low nutrients/gfo I've been running.

Bryopsis is slowing losing its dark green color and it's slowly getting shorter.

I think this medication needs enough "plant" ( vs "root") with bio-activity going on for the ergosterol interference to be meaningful. I think is somehow is tied to photosynthesis. You know how certain weed killers kill the plants roots by soaking into its leaves, and others soak up thru the roots to kill the plants? Looking forward to what your experience is with this go round.

Has nobody spot treated at the root with a syringe? I feel this may the best answer for Rd 2 treatments. I have 7 more days before the end of the 2 weeks. But, after a 50% WC I am absolutely going to mix my dose 1/2 cup of ro di/10g tank volume/200mg fluconazol. I am going to shut off all power heads and pumps and apply at the root with a syringe then give 2 hours for absorption before bringing pumps back up.

I just realized my serpent starts have moved into the same hole and won't leave it. No major loss if they don't make it but I would prefer they do.

Is this treatment affected on coralline

It has not effected Coraline growth per any of the accounts on R2R. I have a relatively new tank and Coraline e growth has seemed to increase.

I apologize if this has been asked and answered already, but I don't have the time to read through the entire thread. Has anyone used fluconazole in a tank with coral banded shrimp or bubble tip anemones? I would like to give fluconazole a try to get rid of my bryposis infestation but don't want to harm either of these two animals.

Thanks,

Bruce

Really glad you asked. I've been reading off and on and had not seen this answered. I was going through every page now to find the answer. Tn happy I don't have to read through 85 pages
Thank you

There have been users who treated without negatively effecting BTA's or shrimp. However, there are no guarantees in this hobby. Especially not with borderline experimental treatments.

No I haven't but that's a great experiment! Please let us know how that works out :)

Yes I agree. That was why I suggested people not pull it during treatment and why it took longer to die. I may have also let my tank "rest" a tad too long also. I'm not worried though if it doesn't work then I'll let it grow back in and kill it again hahaha [emoji12]

Just joined this forum to seek some help.. I have been following this thread since the start and happy to see the success everyone is having!
We have been fighting with this devil spawn for a long long time now.. I only learned it existed after someone posted this thread on an Aussie FB page, all this time I thought I was fighting GHA and losing my mind wondering why its still here with the low nutrients we have only to learn the bad and good news.
Sadly in Australia you cant buy this without a prescription and even though I have been trying for months I cant source it anywhere :(
I was hoping I can get someone to send me some if that is at all possible... Im happy to transfer some money over with a bit extra for the help but Im getting desperate now.. Its starting to choke out our corals and I cant stop it.

I can't find it in capsule form only tablet. Has anyone tried crushing tablets? Obviously the effective ingredient is the same I don't know if the binder was reef safe.
