Bryopsis Cure: My Battle With Bryopsis Using Fluconazole

Did Fluconazole Kill all of your Bryopsis?

  • Yes

  • No

  • I'm treating my tank with it now.

  • I love Bryopsis and I'm mad that everyone is killing it.

Did some research on this,
You can leave carbon in,
Also since this is not a bacterial medicine I suppose I can leave my UV online? I had a breakout of cryp in my tank and my UV cleared it, i feel better if I leave it online.
What do you think?
Thanks

Yes carbon, gfo and uv are ok... Purigen is not in case anyone running it needs to know.

I added Fluconazole 2 weeks ago today. Bryopsis is all but gone from the base of my Valida, but turf, bubble, and GHA remain with no visible change. I was going to do a WC and then a second dose, but I'm wondering if I should just add the second dose without a change? My nitrate/phosphates are holding fine since I've had no die-off. Also might manually remove as much as possible prior to dosing again. Thoughts?

I'm curious what your nutrient levels are. if they are super low maybe just add the second dose on the off chance that active metabolites are still present in the system.

Just retested and phosphates are 0.03, nitrates 5. I'm thinking water change as I run ULNS usually.

Day 6. More lightening and die off of my Bryopsis. Nothing crazy fast but it's noticeable every day. My Starry Blenny is helping to eat this stuff as well now. I'm running gfo and no skimming the entire time.

absolutely

Not to argue but I would bet prsnlty's last dollar that activated carbon will pull out the fluconizole. From medicating a large lfs's tanks I never found a med that carbon would not remove. Randy, can you weigh in on this. Don't want people loosing money doing this. Again, with kind regards.

In Switzerland there is large amounts of fluconazole in their Lakes and they tried to remove it using carbon and failed. There are also other recorded studies stating the same thing. That's where I get my information from as far as carbon goes and is noted and linked earlier in this thread. Purigen is a organic resin and is not carbon.

I want to add...
I don't want anyone to lose money either and want everyone that tries this treatment to win big :) Several people have left carbon on and had the same results as those without. I based my "suggestions" from what has been found so far as well as the studies. This thread is about learning what works best and what may not. Not much is set in stone and what worked for one may not for someone else. Although our suggestions are about what works for most through everyone's trials. The facts are we know that is a one-time dose for a minimum of 14 to 21 days depending on the algae you have. We know that if you overdose or dose daily which is the same thing , you risk damaging if not killing your system. We also know that purigen & or skimming will remove the medication. We also know that gfo is not designed to remove this medication either. There is also strong evidence that higher lit areas are more likely to die first then low light or shaded areas. Everyone on this thread that is been here helping others out are doing it with the best intentions in mind including myself :D

2000 mg for my 130 gal
Total water vol 100 gal
Left in carbon, left on UV
lowered skimmer but not off line
Left pellet reactor on
Pulled out Poly Filter
Dosing same schedule
I will try and post a picture of the same spot daily

I am on day 4 and my tank is noticeably better. I can't believe how well this is working for everyone including me. I will post pics before and after once the complete cycle is done.

I got it from eBay :
https://www.ebay.fr/itm/142275227542
It took 15 days to arrive in Europe. It is a russian brand but it worked very well in my tank.

Looks like the listing has ended and I have searched Ebay previously and got no hits.. thanks though

Might try a vet as suggested but the vets I have called were very apprehensive about prescribing anything saying they dont deal with fish.

Nice corals. Any issues with the emperor angel arming your corals? I would love to get another one but here of too many coral biters.

He's a good boy! I had one that died after 10 years , he was about 8 inches , I've never had a problem with the angels, but they are well fed

I may have to give it a shot. Had one in a fish only tank in the 80s. Thanks for the input.

Do you have any other pets? Because if you do you can make an appointment for that Pat and then have a conversation with the vet period 9 times out of 10 the go ahead and prescribe it for you so I've heard from others in Australia

Ask to come in and talk to the vet. They were all apprehensive when I called up too but when I went to them in person with the first page of this thread (pics included) and explained what it does and how it can't harm the fish he was more than happy to give me some.

Maybe also say that other reef keepers in Aus (me at least) have been able to get it from a vet with no issues and that might help.

Day 7. Things are very slowly thinning out. I know some of you said day 18 was the point you saw real change so the amount of reduction I've seen in 7 days leaves me somewhat hopeful I can defeat this stuff.

Fluconazole worked great for me! 14 days after dose ALL Bryopsis and GHA was gone. Just wondering if anyone started to get what appears to be brown Diatoms after treatment was done. I'm only getting it on sand and glass and didn't have any I'm aware of before.
