(Bryopsis) How High Can I Take My Mag?

I've been battling bryopsis in my 125g reef by dosing Tech-M, I Started on July 17.
I dosed 2 gallons of Tech-M over the next month

7-17 mag was at 1360
8-14 mag was at 2300
8-24 it was at 2240

Noticed quite a bit of die off while I was dosing but now its back to growing again.
I've bought 2 more gallons and have started dosing again.

Any Idea how much higher I can take the Mag safely without harming any fish or coral?

Any other tips on getting rid of this plague would be appreciated also.

That is some tough stuff. The few times I had it 1600 was the magic number for getting rid of it with tech m.

Yes I am, I started dosing RedSea No3Po4X a few weeks ago.
No3 was at 5ppm, Po4 was 0.08 when I started
Now No3 is less then .5 and Po4 is .02

I can tell you from experience that lettuce nudis (atleast mine) eat it with vigor. Seem to prefer it in my 30 gal macro fuge. Plenty of other options in there but they prefer it.

Your no3 and po4 was not in a bad place before adding the methanol
Also bryopsis does not care what the numbers are. They are opportunistic
By adding the methanol you will see bacterial blooms that your skimmer needs to extract.

I agree, I just thought it might be worth trying to get them a little lower while trying to kill this Bryopsis.

And that is just fine but your no3 is getting too low

I also agree which is why I cut the dose down to 1 ml a day 3 or 4 days ago from 5ml, Testing levels weekly.

At 2200 you might start to see a decline in any snail population and issues with inverts. I've held mag at 1800 with no ill effect to help fight Bryopsis. I also started pulling rock out and targeting growth with straight 3% Hydrogen Peroxide.

I'm at 2000 right now with mine and just noticed lots of snails and an urchin trying to get out of the water. Not sure if it is a coincidence cause I have noticed this occasionally before.
1800 has always done it for me before. Not sure if we are running into a more resilient strain or if it does build an immunity.
Note; I am not using kent, never have. I am just using epsom salt. Previously I used a mix of MGSO4 and MGCL. not sure if that makes a difference

The Kent Tech M is the only brand of magnesium that has worked for me in the fight against Bryopsis. I have read that product is effective because of it's impurities and not so much the mag. That is why I strickly use Tech M for Bryopsis control and a more pure mag such as E.S.V. for dosing.

Mag that high is going to wipe out your inverts. I know this from experience.

Well I've been adding 300ml a day (35ppm rise) and the Bryopsis is already starting to turn clear again...
Crossing my fingers that it doesn't take too much more to see it disappear for good.

Yes take out what snails you have left and put them in fresh regular seawater.
I got rid of bryopsis with Kent tech m, a uv sterilizer appropriate for my size tank, and phosban reactor. I changed the media every week. Some of your inhabitants won't like the shift but it should trigger the die off in the bryopsis.

What I did to get rid of it may not be sage or right but it has worked great so far with no ill effects and it has not returned since either so here's what I did I pulled the rock out and manually removed what I could I then soaked the area in straight peroxide for a min then rinsed then soaked area in straight vinegar for a min then rinsed and then lastly and cautiously soaked the spot with rubbing alcohol although very important don't get it on any coral or in the tank and then rinsed last time and back in tank and no issues at all and no more bryopsis

I just raised my Mag to the upper limits of between 1500-1600 ppm using Tech M and was very diligent about pulling off by hand as much Bryops as possible. It worked for me in 2 different tanks. Takes 2-3 weeks, but I didn't feel comfortable raising to the extreme levels some have suggested in this thread as this has to put stress on both corals and fish.

Also to note I did try the other methods before doing this and didn't work including the lettuce nudibranch just my luck in get the one that don't eat this stuff and I am in no way endorsing this method to anyone to try but it did work for me

I've had mine at 2200 ppm with ill effect for a month. Your snails will die though so remove them and any other inverts.
