As you can see there is a lot of green in there that is giving me some problems.
I cycled my tank using pure ammonia and it cycled very fast (partially because I cooked my dry rock for a few weeks with 10lb of live so it cycled some while curing). I have 40lb of BRS pukani, 50lb of reefsaver, and ~10lb of live rock from a local reefer. I cured all the dry rock by bleaching it for 24hrs then doing an acid bath. Once all of the bleach and acid was removed I cured it in a Brute with the 10lb of live rock doe about 2 weeks continually testing for phosphates.

Here are my current water parameters as of about 20min ago:

Salinity (Refractometer): 1.026
Alk (Red Sea): 7.8
Ca (Red Sea): 410
Mg (Red Sea): 1320
Ammonia (API): 0
Nitrite (API): 0
Nitrate (API): 10
Phosphates (Salifert): 0
pH (Probe): 7.9

My lighting is a DIY RapidLED build and I run it on an APEX controller so that it mimics the reef tables on the APEX.

I have added the CUC after being ammonia free for about a week. I have IDed most of the algae I think. There is a tiny bit of cyano, some green film, and there was diatoms but they died back/got eaten. The big chunks of green are what concern me. I think it is bryopsis (like 90% sure) and I have read about how it can be a nightmare to fight.

Here is a pic of the algae:

In my research I found a thread about how raising Mg levels can help kill the bryopsis so I ordered the 1gal jug of Tech M and it is on its way. My question is, how does this go as a long term solution and is this outbreak of bryopsis a passing thing that comes with a new tank? I have not really been feeding the tank at all (I only put a pinch of food in about a week ago to test for an ammonia spike), I have a ball of cheato in the sump, and I am skimming and pulling some nasty funk out. Is there anything else I can do at the moment to fight this?

I don't really want to add anything to the tank until I get this under control.

Interesting. I read that almost nothing (except possibly Mexican Turbo) will eat it. I was considering a foxface as my first fish for this tank but I would rather get this under control before I start putting things into the tank.

.

i think you need some sort of fish to graze i know you dont want to add them yet but nothing invertebrate i think will knock that down. my purples and my yellows cleaned my new tank i had the same thing occur.
and if there is no coral.....shut the light down and add a tang like yellow purple vlamingi etc

i've had bryopisis many times and that dosent look quite right

When I Google "bryopsis" this pic comes up and it looks exactly like what is in my tank.

Would be nice if it wasn't bryopsis because of how hard it is to get rid of but I am less than optimistic.

It is byropsis. I have it on my full blown reef and it is the devil. I have Kent tech m on the way. If it were me I would first kick your friend. Lol j/k. Then I would remove all rock bleach it and start over. Believe me this will be easier to do now

Lol. Bryopsis is not worth bleaching ur rock over. Just do the tech m. U will be surprised how fast it goes away

Ok maybe you don't have to bleach it but I am pretty mad at mine so might be trying to take my aggression out at yours lol

I have battled bryopsis for a very long time. The fix was very simple. Use kent tech m magnesium to raise your mag up to 1600. When I did this every single scrap of bryopsis was gone In 7days. No reactions on any fish or corals. It's been a few months and it still has not returned. The magnesium from BRS(tried using what I had on hand first) does not do the trick. It has to be the tech m from kent.

does that mean that there are something else in the tech M that is killing the algae instead of the high mg? I want to do this also but afraid that the high mg will kill some of my priced corals.
( I have H.A. problem in my frag tank and that is why I am not transferring my corals over, don't want my DT to get infected)

Ok so I have had the lights off for about 3 days now and will continue that unitil the wreched stuff is gone. I also got my 1gal jug of Tech M in the mail today and doesed a solid 16oz into the tank. I know it will take more but I am not trying to kill all my CUC haha. There is nothing else in the tank I can harm though so I am not too worried about having the Mg get too high. I will get it to 1600 and see how things for for a week.

I will test Mg levels tomorrow and dose more accordingly. Thanks for the helpful responses!

Good luck. Glad you are able to act early. I hate bryopsis. I had a 90 gallon and bryopsis was the largest reason I took that tank down. I never tried the mag thing, but probably should have. Hope it works out for you. Now inspect everything for it and won't by something if I see bryopsis anywhere.

Yeah. What is weird is that it HAD to have come from the live rock I got and when I bought the rock I made sure to inspect it very closely for things like aiptasia and I never saw anything but some putple coraline and a few feather dusters on either piece (its 2 small pieces). Must have been spores or something lurking on those rocks.

I had it in my tank... only thing i did was raise the light off the tank about 6-7" and increased my CUC which i used turbos which ate the soft stuff and left the limbs behind and my emerald crab plucked them off and ate them all! Took about 2-3 weeks but i didnt have to dose at all! There is some reason y is growing to start so fimd that problem and fox it and it will naturally go away :-) mine was my led lights were to intense and close. Just my .02

My LEDs are about 6" off of the tank. I could maybe raise them a bit and see how that works if it starts coming back after the Tech M treatment.
