Hey reefers!
I have this fern looking algae growing in my overflow. I remove it and it comes back pretty quickly. Any ideas on the best form of attack to remove it? TIA!

Also you should post a pic and verify its bryopsis as there are alot of fern type not all are bryopsis (probly is) but may be clerpa (I'm not spelling the right)

fluconazole be Carefull with any of these med type treatments they can hurt coral and kill gorgonians
Personal anecdote, but I've had no problems dosing fluconazole in a tank with SPS, LPS, and gorgonians. I also haven't heard anyone else claim it damaged their corals.

The only thing I have heard is that it slows down growth while it's in the system, reducing ALK consumption.

Some people have and some people havent, personally it did kill my pinky the bear acro. All consumption also dropped by over 70% so thats one thing that he should watch since the alk spike that can happen if you dont test alk daily can be dangerous.

That stinks. And your certain it was the fluconazole, not just random RTN/STN? I've heard so few people claim issues with fluconazole that I'm really interested to hear this.

Just read your posts in the mega thread. That is so weird. Here's hoping I don't have that happen, especially since I just started keeping SPS. I'll have to pull back on my dosing, though, for sure.

Yea i have tried to keep everything stable, i have used fluco before but back then i had to sps. I just tell people to keep a close eye on their tank when they add it as other people have had problems too. It did clear my tank of bryopsis and GHA im almost done with the treatment but man my acros definitely didnt like it.

Prior to that i havent had issues with my sps, only my pinky the bear started to STN 3 days into the treatment. Nutrients have stayed stable though so thats good.

I'm curious, did you turn off your skimmer? I'm seeing some people say they didn't and it still worked for them.

I left it on but with the cup removed just to aerate the water. Lets just say its been getting nasty in the sump lol

Haha I wish that was an option for me. Mine is HOB, and no matter how far I open the air valve, it still bubbles over.

I'm debating turning it on after seeing others with positive experiences, though. I really want to keep my pH up.

I used fluconazole but it returned about 9 months later so I ended up removing most corals from the two rocks affected and dipped them in peroxide/tank water mix for 10 min and that was the nail in the coffin it seems. Once the bryopsis was damaged by peroxide and dying, the CUC went to town.

I wish that was an option for me, but not only does it sound like a huge PITA, I have corals glued and encrusted on. Glad it worked for you, though.

Yah I am sure it is not an option for most, was just 2 rocks for me though. Here is an acro chilling on the rock above the peroxide dip... lol I really just wanted to be done with this nuisance algae. The coral came through fine.

It definatly killed my gorgonian and I have read alot of other reports of people losing zoas , palys , acros and some types of lps seems to be hit or miss to be honest I think it kills some types of zooxanthellae and thats why it kill a colony of zoas right next to a difrent colony thats nkt affected etc it also for sure damages the flesh of the gorgonians I have and makes the ones I had disintegrate there are also reports of it doing absolutely nothing to the bryopsis but killed coral so theres also that chance and honestly if its just unsightly but not hurting anything as mine is then why chance it manual removal does not take that long and again even if it does go away there is the chance yet again it'll come back with a vengence
